Why can't I change my down-vote to a up-vote in KYM?

Supposedly people changing their votes would take up too much server space.
Due to the amount of pressure voting puts on the server they had to institute a 5 second timer in the comments, and then the forums, and then they upped it to 8 on both.
Site infrastructure, on the karma side, is not optimized well. About a year back Asdfghjkl tried upvoting every post in the image cleaning thread. The site lagged the heck out and he got a warning from James.
Now, imagine what kind of havoc it'd wreck if people had the ability to switch their votes, even once. Unless it was something ridiculous, like one vote switch a day, or only able to switch votes after a day, it'd be that much easier to lag the site. It'd have to be compensated by an even longer timer between votes.
This also isn't taking into account the trolling aspect. A while back the forums had something like that, but people would go through their past votes and undo a lot of them to fuck with people's karma. That got it removed.

Edit: In other words, why can't I switch votes?
Response to Rivers and Bonaparte:
Is there any possible solutions like adding more server space?
There is a solution. Think before rating the post. If you're worried they may edit the post, wait 30-minutes before doing so.

My sincere apology that I accidentally downvoted your post, and unfortunately, I still can't change my vote.

It's okay, James can waste unneeded money to fix your incompetency. :)

I'm actually dead serious. I click click click click on that up-vote on the comment I accidentally or in your perspective deviously down-voted. :(
Edit: Also, rude. What if I want to change my mind and decided to change that vote. I follow what you instructed me to do but it doesn't seem to work anymore.
As has been said, "muh servers" is the reason. KYM's held together with duct tape, bubblegum, and Don's crushed dreams of not writing political articles and unless Literally literally dumps a couple million to redo the site's code and optimize thumbnails (the reason you can't disable spoiler and NSFW thumbnails) and karma and the like, it'll stay that way.
Enough people did complain about it that they eventually added the "Are you sure you want to downvote?" prompt for comments (and I think images). The forums don't have it, though.

I understand but still though.
