I think some people find it as a way to escape depression, only to be attached to it making it a bigger problem. But that situation might be different to others so I'm not sure.

It definitely could be. I know a person who actually suffers from depression and while facebook and social media may not be the root cause of it, it certainly doesn't help the matter.
Of course, this varies from person to person so there's no real solution to the issue other than to let the individual decide if it's helping or hurting.

I don't suffer from Facebook Depression, I really suffer more from Facebook Envy in which I go to the pages of my former high school friends and I get jealous each time I see them being happy or dating someone.

Well, it certainly can if some asshats decide to gang up and verbally attack you……
Otherwise, I don't think it has negative affects when it comes to depression and self esteem…. Unless you start using likes and follows and things as a measure of self-worth.
What kind of depression are we taking about? There are basically three tiers:
1. Major depressive disorder, i.e. clinical depression
2. A severe depressed mood, i.e. the highest level of sadness without something being neurologically wrong
3. Whiny teenager "depression"
For the lowest one, certainly- in fact, it's probably the number one cause today. For the second, possibly. It all depends on how sensitive you are to how other people see you, and of course just how severely bad those people's behavior is on social media. Finally, I'd say it could serve as a factor in the onset of MDD, but never more than a very minor factor. There's got to be a whole other set of things in place. But it obviously won't make you feel any better if you already have it.

2. sometimes 3.
Maybe i got depression confused for envy
The existence of Facebook makes me depressed.
I don't think social media itself can make you depressed, but how some people might treat you (or not treat you in any way whatsoever) on social media sure can!
