What we can do to make KYM better as a community

In late 2008, Jamie Dubs started this site as part of a ROCKETBOOM series on internet memes. The site had few contributions at that time, and would continue. We have grown incredibly fast, and our site has improved very much since then. I thank all the contributors, the KYM chief staff, as well as Chris Menning, Captain Blubber, and Brad Kim for being great admins. Now it seems it is time to take our next big step forward, both as a site, and as members. As members, we should continue our hard work, and improve where we can: 1:Try to make sure that we have an actual meme before we submit. 2:Never submit duplicates. 3:Don't submit anything stupid, such as Tendertiger. 4:Make site rules/guidelines.
As a site, we should: 1:Expand to viral content and phenomena that isn't classified as a meme. 2:Seperate the discussion forum into 2 sections, one for talk about memes, and one for casual talk. 3:Improve sub-meme trees. 4:Fix site errors, primarily buttons. 5:Allow for the adding of multiple images at one time. It takes forever as is. 6:Create beginner's guide.
7:Once we have stickies, make FAQ, etc.
I am open to any other suggestions, comments, ideas, etc. (And so are our admins)

Thank you for all considerations.

Thanks for summing that up, Real Genius. There's been lots of talking in different threads and it's hard to grasp all of what's being discussed about if I have to jump from thread to thread to thread. Now let me add, promote, and/or negate some things.

1. I don't know what the admins will think about spreading to viral content and phenomena. It sounds like a great idea but that seems like too much hard work for a site that already has enough baggage on its shoulders. I believe sticking to internet memes will be the best approach for now and we can continue discussing the issue until we come to a final decision which will hopefully come soon.
2. Though I find it kind of cruel to only allow Jr. Researchers and above to make articles, I have to agree that it's best to keep the newfaggotry at bay. Also, I agree with adding more ranks for great justice.
3. Establishing the KYM dictionary will also be a priority. We've been talking about it for a long time now and it has only been now that Brad and the others have been trying to sort things out. Can't wait to see what it will be like.

Basically, there's nothing else I can think of at the moment. I'll get back to you once this thread gets rolling smoother with a bit more admin talk.

@Real Genius

Here's my response for all your suggestions, I don't speak for all admins.

Member rules.

1. Agree

2. Agree

3. That's gonna be tough to keep going, people love to make stupid entries.

4. I do believe that is being worked on.

Site improvements.

1. I thought we were doing that all ready, oh well.

2. 2 sections? Not enough. I actually would like as many sections as posible. But the meme/casual talk does need some seperation.

3. I can't do anything about that. I thought they were fine.

4. I believe that's being worked on.

5. Not a big fan of that. I never minded 1 at a time. Maybe increasing it a bit, like to 3 would work but I still like 1 by 1 adding.

6. I'm pretty sure that's being worked on as well.

7. Same with this I think it's being worked on.

@ Jostin

Remember, my opinions, not KYM's.

1. I agree.

2. I've some sites where you have to work enough to do things and they are tough to stick with. We'll just hope guides of some sort would work.

3. Agree.

Good suggestions, dudes.

Yeah but what is someone wants to upload 100-300 lemon parties?

I trust the majority of users to not do such a thing but anyone could sign up and fill any entry with anything from 100 zebras to 100 gay porn pictures (or regular porn pics, I don't know) the image issue could go either way.

I suggest a more convienent way to comment on individual pictures. Maybe a little link below the thumbnail to a comments page? Or a Youtube-esque thumbs up/down thing to rate pics? I just think there should be something there to allow easy feedback, instead of the "open in new window/tab" thing to get to a comment page.

This stuff is all great guys, thanks so much for all the positive feedback!

I've been compiling everything mentioned, and we've started setting up a public dev site where you guys can vote on feature ideas.

I'm personally excited about adding some kind of advanced rating/classification system… probably just for higher level users, the privileges are a great idea too

i declare today a KYM holiday, to bring the community closer togethor:

afroduck remembrance day

never, ever, forget

"travel on sojourner, travel on…"

but seriously, i dont really agree with jack candle when he talks about pic ratings, because almost all the pics posted by us are not (our)OC yadadaimean?

also, real genius's begginer guide, was really genius

@ jostin, wouldnt the dictionary basically be a repeat of urban dictionary?

also in the same sense of the begginers guide, need a definition of what makes a meme, a meme

True, no point for pic ratings.
As far as the dictionary goes, I just gave Brad Kim the best thing we could find, and it seems it would shorten seeking time dramatically.

I don't want to see it become a meme, because of what Chris said. We'd have to cite us as the source, and that's a bit contradictory. Meme chroniclers shouldn't be meme makers.
New idea: Delete the duplicates and junk in the deadpool. Leave the decent attempts standing.

Because I have occasional computer access. However, that's not how the bulk uploading will end up. It will be a privelidge for Researchers and above, I do believe.

yeah, well be um, something.
Wonder what Jostin will be. Actually, he'll probably be an admin.
I noticed that after the crisis we've made good progress…Ironic how that happens, isn't it?

Also, maybe we can have applications for Jr. Mods and Sr. Mods, and perhaps Jr. Admins. Jr Mod apps available at 500 contribs, Sr. Mods at 1000, and Jr Admins at 1500. Denial, Approval by Jamie and/or Chris. Sorry to leave you out, Captain, but you were like us at one time, while Jamie and Chris were founding members.

Also, sorry if Jamie, Andrew, Greg, Yatta or Brad feel insulted by the contribution amounts. I understand that your experience comes from behind the scenes work.

I guess I was one of you little people.

Annyways, I think admins/mods should be picked and not applied for.

If someone is picked and doesn't want to be a mod/admin they just have to say so.

No need to send in a resume or something like that.
