Downvote reason.

So its apparent that downvotes are going nowhere anytime soon, so rather than ask to get rid of them, lets ask to help them. Heres my idea: so we're all familiar with the "are you sure" pop-up when clicking the button. How about when that pop-up comes up there could be a choice for why your are downvoting or a note box to say why you are downvoting the item in question effectively having the user actually think before downvoting and try to find a sufficient reason.

I don't want my inbox spammed with 30 PMs telling me I'm SJW trash or something each time I comment on a controversional entry.

I would actually love that since it would be absolutely hilarious, but yeah, in general it's an inefficient idea.

If we're going to make downvoting such a bureaucratic process, we may as well just ditch it for a "report" button. Same deal, except the message goes to the moderators instead of the user.

Congratulations! You made something simple so inaccessible with your horrible design skills!

Congratulations! You made something simple as a post so unnecessary with your post skills!

If you're not going to list a reason or anything as on why the idea is bad, just avoid posting entirely.

Funny the first time, a plain annoyance by the fifth time.

Not to forget entirely dangerous. Why you ask? Let me explain:

Currently you have the downvote system. These downvotes are anonymous. Any person with an account can hand them out and we won't know it was them. It's a simple enough feature with no big consequences, so it's not entirely necessary to stop making them anonymous.

So what will we do with typing out a reason when downvoting? Make them anonymous or not? Both are dangerous:
- If they are anonymous, we have single-handedly given users THE perfect tool to be a dick without the necessary consequences. You know how bad Tumblr anons are? Well, expect that.
- If we have downvotes resulting in your name appearing to the person receiving the vote, you have abrubtly stopped the anonymous part of the vote system, a blunt change. Alongside that you are organising a witchhunt. If the receiver finds they did not deserve the downvote, they will seek retribution. This will make the system result in a large increase in hostility within the community.

A good idea in theory, but way too many risks and annoyances in the execution.

It's meant to prevent accidental downvoting. It's not necessarily a punishment.

To stay on topic:

IMO it's a bad idea, especially for all the unpopular users. Their inboxes will get unnecessarily spammed.
