Simulation Sickness in Video Games

Explanation on what it is:


So in another thread I gave a brief explanation on why I can't regularly stand N64 era or earlier 3D Games, and by a certain extension I get that same effect when playing FPS games and have never been able to get into them for that reason alone. So I am wondering, KYM, to what extent to you guys feel it. Or if you have had it before, how long did it take for you to adjust to it?

Personally, i never had any simulation sickness when playing videogames. After playing Skyrim for over 400 hours, i never had any serious problems with headaches and such. I guess i'm already adjusted to playing FPS games since i started playing them during my grade school years.

I played plenty of space sim type games that included a full 360 degrees of motion as early as age 5. Not once have I ever gotten motion sickness at all. My body figured out from the get go the difference between whats on screen and my actual movement.

But of course, I'm not everybody. And there are some people who's brains will screw with them when things spin around around on a screen. I think it's more of a genetic thing than a real video game design thing. Some people can cope with all the swirling stimulants, others cant

On a round of Battlefield 3. It was a really intense match that lasted well over an hour. Anyone that's played Battlefield knows Operation Metro. Tight map matched with explosions, sound effects, and very heated gameplay, I needed to lie down after it.

Odd enough, just like Sam, I've never gotten sick when playing Skyrim
