Has hype ever delivered for you?

Hype has ruined a lot of games for me: the expectations exceeded the reality for many rushed projects. Still, there are some games I got really excited about and was overjoyed to find out they delivered. For me, these include Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands 2, Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and probably a couple others that don't come to mind right away. Anyone else have games where the hype actually delivered for them?

For a game before it was released? Hyrule Warriors actually exceeded my hype. I'm still hyped for it. Overall though, I try to keep hype minimal to avoid disappointment. This is why I overall refuse to participate in the Smash Bros hype since I pretty much know it can't live up to the ridiculous hype despite being a good game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the DLC/Expansion, Enemy Within, definitely met my expectations.
Shovel Knight too, since I'm still playing it despite getting all of the achievements and beating it about 20 or so times.

Not once. Not ever.

I used to get mega hyped. For example I was majorly hyped over UT3 and SC2. But the end results failed my expectations badly and made me less appreciative of what was released than what I normally would have been had I not hyped it up.

This in turn made me a more bitter gamer. And that isn't cool. I prefer to game in the most happy-go-lucky manner possible. It just makes things easier that way.

So I've learned to ignore hype and just be pleasantly surprised at getting what I was not expecting.

Because the alternative is to always be bitterly disappointed at not getting what I was expecting.

That's actually what I do most of the time. I prefer this, I haven't gotten hyped for a game in ages (other than HW which I stated above). I do the same for movies as well. It's obnoxious when people have these ridiculous expectations going in to playing games and watching movies and they end up despising nearly everything they watch or play. No wonder you hate everything when you think everything should be god-tier you dumbasses! Movie critics are horrible with this. I don't even read movie reviews anymore because of this (and video game reviews neither for this reason and many more obvious ones). It's stupid. A good example would be the most recent Godzilla movie. Everyone was complaining about it. I went into it with "meh" expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. People expecting a lot more from a fucking summer monster movie are delusional. I don't think people should keep their expectations of everything horrible, just not ridiculously high.

Back on the topic of video games, HL3 is going to face this problem for sure when it eventually comes out. In fact, fear of not livong up to hype is one of the reasons Valve is trying to put off the game as much as possible until they can make it a complete innovative masterpiece and everything the customers want. The more they put it off, the higher the expectations grow. Another series that suffers from this is the Zelda series. The expectations for these games are so preposterously high that when the games come out there's always a large group of people that hate it. Eventually though, they put their expectations to the side and look back on the game or replay it and figure out, "hey, this game is damn good!"

I won't lie and say I'm not guilty of this however. When the next Metroid game is announced, my hype will have no breaks. My expectations will be impossible to achieve.

Hahaha! I knew I'd love HW, but I was also blown away by the awesome. All of my complaints are nitpicks, like weapon fusion being wimpy compared to the DW and Orochi games, but that's about it. I can't stop playing, and it's making my waifu complex even worse.

Beyond that, I remember being really excited for Metroid Prime before it came out. I remember the first time I saw a commercial for it, I literally screamed with excitement. For the time, it lived up to the hype very well. Nowadays not so much. (Just finished it on Trilogy. The amount of backtracking is criminal, I finally gave up on 100% items because it was so damn tedious.)

After that, the disappointments vastly outweigh those times. Even Skyrim, which I just about went nuts over waiting for the UPS guy to arrive with, while excellent, wasn't quite worth the stress.

First of all, never get too hyped.

To answer the question, Smash delivered, MK8 delivered, Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 delivered, ALBW delivered, Kid Icarus: Uprising delivered.
Safe for that, I never truly hyped myself. In fact, often times I'm suprised at how good games are. Luigi's Mansion 2 for example, or Dragon Quest IX or Sonic Generations.

Oh! I remember. I was super hyped for the Trilogy. I had never played any of the three before the Trilogy. When I got it, I found three of the best games ever made. My hype was strong, and the result from those games ended up being 5x better than I could have ever expected. It sounds hyperbolic but not for me. I love that game to death and I still do same as I did when I first played them. Well, I enjoy backtracking and I'm patient. It kind of depends on the tastes of the player on whether they like backtracking or not.

>mfw got a Halo: Reach hype

Dear lord, it delivered to me. Directly. The hype gave me what i wanted. Got pleased. I dont know if someone had the hype too arround here and delivered to them, but for me, it delivered.

For me hype delivers for the most part. The only times I recall it failing was Brink and Halo 4. Brink was made out to be so much better then it was. Halo 4 was even more disappointing as a massive Halo fan because 343 decided to remove more then they added in and what they did add was pretty shitty.

Alien: Isolation delivered for me. It's the best Alien game in years!
Plus, we got these neat promos

Thank God I didn't buy Destiny. I was going to pre-order it, but my brother convinced me to not do it. And Watch Dogs was another trainwreck…

Destiny had a stupid amount of advertisement. Hell, even militaries got a small token… It costed over 500 millions. Now, let's see GTA V. It had decent advertisement and a great gameplay (online mode apart) and it spent 170 millions. Every cent I spent on that game was worth it, in my opinion.

I fail to understand how Destiny ended being such a big letdown. Where did all the cash go?

How about that other Aliens game, the one that came out in 2013? We don't talk about that anymore…

For me, I really think that Mortal Kombat 9 and Bulletstorm lived up to all the hype I had. Bulletstorm gave me an arcade-like shooter with gore and dick jokes, which is something I had been looking forward to, and Mortal Kombat 9 helped bring the series back to its roots: It's lovely, beautiful roots.

Eh.It's more of a hit-and-miss kind of thing. Pokémon X/Y unfortunately was a miss, which I have to blame on the poorly designed narrative, antagonists, and lack of new/cooler Pokémon. Smash 4 is working out well, though. My current hype-train consists of cars made up of KH3/KH2:HD REmix, Pokémon Omega Ruby/Sapphire, and finally, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. (God damnit 2015 come sooner)

I make it a point to avoid over-hyping myself, especially after Destiny. I wonder if they'll ever make up the money they invested into the advertisements.

That said, me and my buddies got super hyped for MGS3, and boy did it deliver.

The one game I distinctly remember being very hyped for was Far Cry 2. Needless to say when it came out I was severely disappointed so since then I make a point of not getting hyped for anything (except of course for when the mythical Half Life 3 is announced, that will get all of my hype and there's no way it will live up to it and I don't care).

Animal Crossing: New Leaf delivered, which was great because I had gotten so hyped at some points that I actually became physically ill with want. To lesser extends, Pokemon XY and Kid Icarus: Uprising come to mind.
