After a 2 Year wait since the last Touhou game, Zun realized selling out to Sony wasn't gonna pay the bills forever. Touhou 16: Hidden Star in Four Seasons got announced today. It's quite a bit more colorful than the last ones.

Reimu and Marisa seem to have completely original move-sets this time around.

First look at Cirno's Alola Form;

Yeah, that's right, Cirno is playable in a mainline game!

Via Kourindou

The Four Player Characters are Reimu, Marisa, Aya, and Cirno. They represent Spring, Winter, Fall, and Summer respectively. The game will be light on gimmicks this time and the difficulty will be toned back to a more relaxed pace.

The game's Playable Demo will be released May 7th at Reitaisai 14, and the full game will be released at Summer Comiket on August 11th.

I don't know enough moonspeak to read the article, what is it saying?
Not only that but what's the in-game plot anyways?
Did someone blow up the donation box? Is there trouble at the Scarlet mansion? Did someone steal Izayoi pads? But most importantly…
Is Cirno the STRONGEST?!

Reimu – Spring
Marisa – Homeless (Winter)
Cirno – Is gonna fight the fucking sun (Summer)

Bets for Autumn are Aya(yayayaya~) or flower mom Yuuka. Most of the talk surrounding it seems to indicate 16 will be the laid back and relaxed counterpart to th15's anal haemorrhaging difficulty.

But it also means more characters. With boss themes. Which the circles will run to the ends of the earth with. Comiket 92 is extra lucky.

Apparently the tanned Cirno has made everybody overlooked that Aya is also playable.

That's right – the two ensemble darkhorses of Touhou just got promoted from spinoffs to the mainline.

Seija playable in mainline when?

I've discovered something else.

Touhou 16's demo will be released on May 7th during Reitaisai 14 (with the full release during Summer Comiket). The same convention will be releasing the demo for 15.5 Antinomy of Common Flowers, which appears to have a tag system like Marvel vs Capcom.

That is going to be a pretty exciting week for starved Touhou fans like myself.

The Demos Are Out!

I played them a bunch, so here is some general info.

  • The Assist System isn't quite Marvel, though is functionally similar. Both characters share one lifebar and can swap at any time.
  • You can now hold the Projectile Button to perform a Non-Spell. It fires a controlled constant stream of bullets and lasts till your spirit orbs deplete or you let go of the button.
  • If you swap while using a non-spell, the character swapping in will fire a unique projectile as they come in.
  • If you have both meters full, while using a spell card you can Cancel the Spell into your partners spell card. This is the only way to use the partners spell. The screenshot I posted earlier actually shows this. (You have to be careful though, if you cancel things like the Master Spark or Evil Sealing Circle too early you lose out on a lot of damage)
  • You lose your partner if you miss your Last Word.

Overall it feels interesting, but after an immense amount of recent practice in UMvC3 and Blazblue Centralfiction, it felt a bit too simplified. There was only one new music track this time, it sounded nice but pales in comparison to Occult la Carte.

  • There are 4 Characters and 4 Sub-Weapons you can choose from. The sub weapons are themed after the characters, thus you can mix and match things like Reimu's Homing Bullets with Marisa's Lasers.
  • The Gimmick is that Graze Dust becomes Seasonal Elementals, which powers up the Sub-Weapons. Sub weapons are not lost if you die, but they can be expended at once for a final "Save my Skin" move. This is also tied to the scoreing system.
  • Stage 1 is a forest in Summer, Stage 2 is the Yokai Mountain in Fall, and Stage 3 is the Hakurei Shrine in deathly netherworld spring.
  • There are 3 Bosses and One Sub Boss. The first boss is a Butterfly Fairy (translation says she thinks she'll become "The God of this New World"), the Second is a Yamanba (who pulls a Mystia and jumps straight from midboss to boss modes), and the Third is the Hakurei Shrine's Komainu (of which Reimu wasn't aware existed). The sub-boss appears on Stage 3, and it's Lily White.

I had a lot of fun with the mechanics this time. Mixing and matching shot styles will probably give give the score runners a mini-maxing heart attack, but I find the customization fun.

No earworms in the soundtrack yet, but overall i can't quite put my finger on why but it's almost like the soundtrack is a tad more serious.
