Do we still need press confrences?

I feel this topic has come on and off over time with the fate of E3 uncertain, but I've been looking back at E3s of old, and how some people tend to hype up press conferences as this big deal. Now, I know some people are gonna say that E3 is a shadow of its former self, but ultimately, I feel that's more a symptom of a western AAA industry that has become too corporate.

Let's say hypothetically we still lived in a world where most of the video game industry was still as renowned as it was in the "oh-so-perfect" 90s. Would we still need press conferences or events like E3? Would you still want them? Why or why not?

For AAA devs not so much but for the small/indies could meant a lot in the marketing

Then the question becomes "Can indie developers afford doing a large scale press event in the same way most big companies did back in the day?"
