What games have you wanted to see get inducted in the World Video Game Hall of Fame? I have always been excited for the World Video Game Hall of Fame and I always pondered "What video game would be perfect?" and so I am asking what games you here on this site would like to see get inducted and why?

Usually games have to fit these criteria's some times
Icon Status – is widely recognized and remembered
Longevity – is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time
Geographical Reach – meets the above criteria across international boundaries
Influence – has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general

Lemme start…

Super Mario 64 – Super Mario 64 has always been a huge stepping point in the Mario series and I honestly am surprised that this wasn't on of the first games that got inducted.

TMNT: Turtles in Time – The TMNT games are pretty much a staple of arcades in general and Turtles in Time is often to be the magnum opus of the TMNT games, heck even the movie TMNT III gets often mistaken for Turtles in Time because of the namesake.

Puyo Puyo 2 – Since Tetris got already got inducted, I don't see why we can't have Puyo Puyo 2 be inducted into the Hall of Fame as well. Puyo Puyo 2 has quite a legacy as well since it is the most rereleased Puyo Puyo game in the series, released on consoles such as Mega Drive, Game Gear, Super Famicom, PC-9801, Sega Saturn, Windows 95, PC Engine CD, PlayStation, Game Boy, Wonderswan, Neo-Geo Pocket Color, PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and on Nintendo Switch.

Resident Evil 4 – This is the Resident Evil game that changed up the genre in the Resident Evil series from survival horror to action. Resident Evil 4 has a ton of rereleases as well that even I lost track.

Five Nights at Freddy's – We all know why…

Wolfenstein 3D: I think Doom easily surpasses the former, but Wolfenstein 3D was among the first fps games ever made and set the foundation for the genre. While the last two games weren't great, I wish the series would get a little more love.

Thief trilogy: A dead franchise now, it did have a reboot back in 2014, but it was a critical and commercial flop. It was very early and innovative take on stealth genre, were avoiding/ghosting your way through enemies within complex manors/dungeons was the optimal approach. While dead, Thief's influences has lived on in its still living modding community and its spiritual successor, Dishonored by Arkane studios.

I also 2nd RE4. It single-handedly changed the landscape for 3rd person shooters in general let alone the franchise itself. Probably for the worse on the 2nd part, but RE has bounced back since it's semi return to form with RE7. Still concerned about the upcoming RE4 remake, I think the original game is perfect as is.

I'd say all the games in the orange box would fit this criteria. Half Life 2 is widely considered to be one of the best games of all time. Portal is a very condensed experience that is so well known that even non gamers know that the cake is a lie. And Team fortress 2 popularised the live service model of games which even if you hate those sort of games you can say TF2 was influential. And all these games run on the source engine which popularised dynamic physics in games, like ragdolls, moving furniture, and physically picking up objects in games and placing them in a physics world.

Other games I could see getting inducted are…

Samurai Shodown II – Often considered to be one of the best Neo-Geo fighting games by many and I can see why. It came out around the time when SNK and Capcom were having a fierce competition in the fighting game community. It is also one of the first fighting games that would be a weapon based fighting game. Samurai Showdown was also an influence for Rurouni Kenshin.

Crazy Taxi – While many other driving games at the time were trying to be another racing game, Sega who was the king of the arcades at this time did something very different. Crazy Taxi is a driving game that isn't a racing game, but a game where you escort customers to their location racing against the time. Crazy Taxi is also one of Sega's biggest IP's and has even been rereleased on many consoles.

Worms Armageddon – One of the best strategic games on PC's and consoles at the time. Worms Armageddon improved so much from the first game that it still receives updates to this day. Worms Armageddon had something new at the time which was a level builder for tournaments. It even has a very dedicated fanbase who still plays the game online to this very day.

Mega Man 2 – Mega Man has had many games, but Mega Man 2 is often considered by many to be the best in the series. Mega Man 2 is the sequel that pretty much saved the series.

Mega Man X4 – If we are talking about Mega Man X games than I feel like Mega Man X4 is the game that should very well be inducted. Mega Man X4 was a groundbreaking game since it was a very first Mega Man game that was not on a Nintendo console. The graphics were more detailed than the previous Mega Man X games and the game allowed players to select Zero as a playable character.

Final Fantasy 7

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Starfox 64

Pokemon Red and Blue

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Halo: Combat Evolved

Those are some examples I thought of that weren’t mentioned already

I'd jokingly say Kirby and the Forgotten Land since Kirby has gone on the longest without their main game going 3. (Return to Dreamland to Star Allies is 2.5D)

I'd go with Smash 64 since it spawned a new type of fighting game that's also a massive series.

Also Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox, Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom.

Here are some more games I think could get inducted.

Hollow Knight – Hollow Knight is a very popular indie game that has some beautiful visuals, great worldbuilding, and storytelling. The game is a Metroidvania mixed with a Souls like gameplay. Hollow Knight also won awards, has multiple expansions, and a sequel coming out soon. Hollow Knight is also a very iconic indie game.

Shovel Knight – On the subject of indie game knights, Shovel Knight is also another hugely iconic indie game who the character Shovel Knight has made multiple cameos in other indie games. Shovel Knight has won various awards, even winning best indie game at The Game Awards. There are even updates that included campaigns for the other Shovel Knight characters in their own stories.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – I was debating with myself which Shantae game is the most popular, but I decided to go with Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. This is by far probably the most iconic Shantae game since it has the iconic visuals that mainline Shantae games will have, a very iconic soundtrack, and other gameplay modes that was added from updates.

Katamari Damacy – Katamari Damacy is a very well known game since it grew in popular by its great gameplay, unique art style, iconic soundtrack, and its silly humor. This was also a very first physics based game of its time as well. The gameplay utilized the twin stick controls perfectly and the game was also great of how chaotic it was. Plus most of the theme songs in this game get stuck in your head.

Dark Souls

Icon Status – Yes.
Longevity – Still played to this day, has multiple sequels and spiritual successors.
Geographical Reach – Spread from Japan to Europe and America.
Influence – Spawned the soulslike genre (if you disregard Demon Souls), also memes galore.

So people can see which ones are already in. (Minecraft, FF7, Pokemon Red/Green/Blue, Halo, for example)

Personally, I have to admit that I think hall of fames are largely about as much BS as award shows are. My evidence being that friggen Candy Crush and Words With Friends are possible inductees this year alongside games that should already be in such as Civilization and OoT. SimCity still hasn't even been considered!

My rant out of the way, aside from some of the aforementioned and currently nominated games, I can list A LOT of games if I think about it, but off the top of my head:

Roller Coaster Tycoon
Contra
Smash Bros. (64 started it, but Melee is where it really took off, so take your pick)
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
Battlefield 1942
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy XIV (WoW is in, and I think FFXIV has passed that bar, IMO)
Ultima
etc.

On a side note, the longevity criteria seems to be the least important (or even arbitrary), considering quite a few of the inductees really haven't been relevant for years, and when they were relevant, sometimes not for very long.
