In a surprise move, Nintendo has confirmed a Zelda movie is indeed in production, but rather than being animated like the recent Mario movie, this one will be live action. Also of note is Universal isn't the company helping fund and distribute the film, but instead Nintendo is partnering with Sony's movie division, Sony Pictures, and Avi Arad, who helped fund a lot of Marvel productions such as The Amazing Spider-Man. Like with the Mario movie, Zelda series creator Shigeru Miyamoto will be acting as producer on the film, with directorial duties going to Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner trilogy of movie adaptations, and is the director of the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
No word yet on a tentative release date or who will be cast in the film, though speculation is already running wild on how the movie will handle Link, like will they opt for him to be mute, or will be speaking in full sentences for the first time since the infamous Zelda cartoon and non-canon CD-i games? Also will he be played by the long rumored Tom Holland, or will Chris Pratt be memed into the lead? Who knows, but I'm certainly interested to see which direction this movie is headed in.
