While I agree with some in saying that nothing of value was lost with /r//fatpeoplehate's banning I also have to say that there are other subreddits that are just as bad, and not banning those ones shows how hypocritical the mods are.

r/Hamplanethatred has also been banned, why? because they discussed, and discussion is HARASSMENT!

SRS still not banned. why? because they don't know how to discuss, they only know how to hunt people down and shout insults to them. but that's not harassment.

Well, nobody is arguing that Reddit mods and admins aren't shit. That's something I think everyone agrees on.

I really do wish they'd ban all of the other harassing subreddits instead of just cherry picking the ones that rustle their jimmies the most.

Last edited Jun 10, 2015 at 04:41PM EDT

Have these people at any point actually given a strict definition of what they term "harassment"? The fact is, criticism can be brutal, and it can be very personal. That doesn't make it illegitimate, or something that should be purged by calling it a scary name.

Voat is really slow with alpha stickered to it but the subreddit has transferred there.

Let's see how transfers have been going:

4chan → 8chan
TvTropes → AllTheTropes
Reddit → Voat
Youtube → Various porn video hosting sites
Twitch.tv → Hitbox.tv

Am I missing something?

What is /r/fatpeoplehate?

It was a part of reddit devoted to hating fat people, and this is as unbiasedly as i can put it, they also went on other parts of the site and tried pusing there agenda. Reddit's main image service, imgur, previously started taking frontpaged fph images down, and they put imgur mod photos in the sidebar as examples of fat people. They have currently crawled out of the woodwork, and the main frontpage is full of it's shit.

What 'controversy' has happened with TvTropes?

Just so long as they remember: hating fat unhealthy people means you're a bigoted asshole, but hating anorexic unhealthy people is totally normal, I mean, you wouldn't expect anyone to actually think being that skinny is attractive, right?

Uh…. Who hates anorexic people? Are you talking about the whole "fuck skinny bitches" mantra that some over-zealous overweight people spout out? Because I don't think people actually hate them, but some types to like to fling the word around like it's just some petty insult.-Though to be fair, that's almost just as bad. I'm fat myself and I kinda understand why they do it, but can we empower ourselves in a way that doesn't involve putting another group of people down?!-

^ there are anti-ana subreddits, hell, the world is anti-ana.
Harassing people who eat themselves into obesity = bad.
Harassing people who don't eat themselves to skin and bones = okay!
Telling fat people they should lose weight = bad.
Telling ana people they should gain weight = good!
Both illnesses, both unhealthy, both bad ways to live, only one is a class spared from opinion by precious, sensitive feelings.

I did some digging – the best answer I could find was that they purged a lot of NSFW content and people got pissed off. It's been a simmering issue for years, ever since Google Ads shut them out for hosting too much of the stuff. Also, they changed some trope names in ways that people didn't like.

Also, me reading this thread:

Well, anorexia and obesity aren't quite comparable though.

Anorexia is more of a mental illness, not a physical condition. It's about an unhealthy obsession with dieting-no, starving yourself, it's about thinking you're still fat when you could be as thin as a rail. Many people who are anorexic (especially when they're just starting to be anorexic), are also obese.

And while there's certainly some mental stuff going on (you can be addicted to junk food, for example,) obesity is definitely more of a physical thing.

Plus, the side effects of anorexia tend to be worse and/or more irreversible. For example, obesity can cause brain shrinkage, and anorexia can cause brain damage, but the brain shrinkage can be fixed with weight loss. The brain damage caused by anorexia is permanent.

….. Oh course, all of the things I said is justifying trying harder to make an anorexic person live a healthier lifestyle and trying so hard to make an obese person live healthier, this is not justifying straight up harassing people who anorexic.

But again, I never heard of being an ass to people with deadly mental condition as being politically correct…. Aside from subreddits, where have you seen people harassing others with anorexia and peole act like it's okay?

Look around.

Unless you mean a minimum weight limit, of course.

Except if the body you love looks like this:

or this:

but you should be proud of this:

this is inspiring:

This picture:

comes with the caption: I'm fat and proud! Now I wear what I want and for the first time ever I am happy to be me!

and people are thrilled, she's happy with herself, unhealthy and damaging as her weight may be.

This picture:

was deleted from the website it was posted to and this mentally sick girl should be ashamed of being proud of her body.

The double standard is blatant.

wooo look at the up and downvotes go on my other posts!
Bringing this hypocrisy into light seems to have struck a controversial nerve.

No….

Everyone should be able to love themselves regardless of physical appearance, weight, whatever…. Even anorexic and fat people. But for me at least, not everyone should be satisfied with how they are. I don't even think overweight people should be satisfied with themselves if they're bigger than a size 18- the risk for health complications become simply too high to be acceptable , but anorexia is even worse, because, again, it's not a physical condition, it's more like a mental illness. "Anorexia" and "underweight" are not synonymous. People can be skinny, healthy or not, and not be anorexic, and people can be fat and be anorexic. Do you really think people should satisfied with themselves if they starve themselves? Malnourish themselves? Are unable to judge whether or not they're a healthy weight? Are starving themselves to dangerous weights? Are always wanting to lose more weight, and embrace this mindset like it's their friend? Do you think that's safe?!

It's okay to be skinny (or fat), but only in reason… And embracing and possessing a mindset where you could starve yourself to death in a few years is not reasonable.

And I still haven't seen anything that proves that people with anorexia should be ashamed. Sure, that picture was removed, but it could be because it promotes a potentially dangerous mindset and not be because the girl should be ashamed of loving herself.

if 8chan is anything to go by it will probably be forgotten, nobody will care anymore and ppl will continue to use 4chan as if nothing happened.

i dont know why so much controversy over a subreddit that spread hate speech other than the fact other subs like r/coontown still exist

most of the mods there were dipshits anyways, and suddenly it gets banned and they didint do nuffin wrong.

Why are you in charge of what people need to feel satisfied about themselves? In a world where we support hormone treatments and physical surgery to switch genders when we're not satisfied with ours, you want to say that eating an extremely limited calorie diet is where the line gets drawn?

If somebody likes how their hip and rib bones look protruding, the fuck do you care? You gonna pay for their funeral? On the other hand, how many obese lives have my tax dollars saved from death by heart attack? There's that double standard again.

The DSM authors have been debating adding obesity as a mental illness for about three years now, actually. Does that change your opinion about fat pride?

How can she love herself if her she's told she only loves her body because she's mentally ill, because there's something wrong with her brain?

girrrl, better believe that came from the glossy pages of a magazine, 'cause when obese girls go out in bikinis the world needs to know and love her! casually ignoring that she could be dead of a heart attack in a few years, just like the ana girl could have starved

this girl, though, her body promotes a dangerous mindset, what if little girls see her and want to be like her? she should be ashamed of herself.

Fuck it, it's 2:00 in the morning, I don't really care who's right or wrong anymore, I need to go to sleep.

As much as I support 'much freeze peach', nothing of value has been lost with fatpeoplehate being banned and I couldn't give two shits about it. I mean he'll, it had hate in the name. If you want to do an anti-anything page without being a twat then that's not how you do it. I'd say, fine admins, you go ban away.

I'll only start getting concerned though if they start nuking less extreme, 'anti SJW' subreddits like TiA and KiA, sites which don't promote any actual 'hate', that's where I'll start chanting all the 'anti censorship' bullshit.

I think the way Reddit would lose a lot of traffic would be if it was redesigned layout-wise but I don't think that will happen. Of course, Reddit also has problems with astroturfs.

Wow what an insightful comment, this really turned the discussion round and made people think different ways because you just contributed so much.

Personally I think it was an odd transition to banning subreddits with illegal content to one where people go to hate overweight people. I mean it looks likes there's some really heavy (no pun intended) bias towards what they chose to ban, when stuff like r/skinnypeoplehate [NSFW WARNING] are still around, even worse there are subreddits that exist like r/rapingwomen that are not banned.

Sure nothing was really lost when they banned that subreddit, but nothing was achieved either, illegal and abhorrent content is still around because reddit doesn't have its priorities straight.

It's just hypocritical especially that now your allowed to hate skinny people (IE like people who have an ectomorphic body type or anorexia) but not those who gorge themselves on more food then they will ever need (or just naturally quite overweight).

Does anyone know if any of the admins are overweight or obese? That could explain something.

@SpiderByte

I was never claiming it was insightful? I'm aware that's it's a bad way to end a discussion but I just don't feel like continuing it any more.

I was unaware that it was used to do those things, thanks for NSFW tag. Just pointing out there's some more stuff like it with r/UglyPeopleHate (I checked this one, no NSFW that I could find.)

It's really strange that they have only targeted those that are "harassing" (the hatred and assholery of the people on those shitholes were relatively self contained) transgenders and fat people. Still nothing of any other kind of harassment or hatred.

Fatpeoplehate was banned because an FPH mod banned the CEO of Imgur for the lolz and he had Reddit do something about it. The ban was for corporate political reasons, the Reddit administrators lied about it, and the attitude of the admins suggests that this will not be the last of the politically motivated bans.

Lost in the noise about FPH, another sub banned was NeoFAG which was a bunch of channers making fun of NeoGAF using the usual coarse chan language (everyone is a nigger faggot lol im 12). No warning was given to the sub admins, and as in the case of FPH there is no sign that the sub broke site rules. It seems to have been banned for criticizing the way that another commercial entity is run.

Reddit's culture has a lot to do with the outrage. Reddit was founded as a site for absolutely free speech where the proper response to hate speech is to downvote and move on, or to make your own sub with different rules. The admins are not only lying to the users but overturning Reddit's central founding principle, which has the users outraged.

And then there a large number of users who simply want to make fun of fat people.

@lisa:

Neither fat people nor anorexic people should be shamed.

For those than can help their weight problems, they should be encouraged to change rather than relentlessly harassed over it.

Is being overweight or anorexic something to be proud of? No, not really, if you can help it. Should you be shamed for it? I don't think so.

You're right, of course. Not everyone sees it like I do, and that's where the horrendous double standards start popping up.

Thank you based Lombardo.

@lisalombs

You literally can't be anorexic and proud of your body- that's kinda the fucking definition of anorexia nervosa in the first place. Also, your analogy doesn't work, because the "fat" women you're showing aren't actually that overweight. My guess is, if you found the BMI percentile of the woman in that last photo and flipped it, you'd get a range beyond 300 pounds. When someone's at that point, all but the most radical of the Fat Acceptance people would rightfully have serious concerns along with everyone else.

{ the “fat” women you’re showing aren’t actually that overweight }

Holy shit Decimals, they're all clinically obese. That's why I posted them specifically. All the skinny girl pics are from pro-ana sites and they are, in fact, proud of their bodies. Anorexia is just as misunderstood as a "mental illness" as obesity itself. Just like not every transperson needs surgery to accept their body, not every anorexic needs to be a day away from death to accept theirs.

"Anorexia is just as misunderstood as a “mental illness” as obesity itself."

So… are you saying that it isn't a mental illness? What authority do you have to proclaim that? I'm no expert either, but I can see pretty clearly that the field has it classified as an eating disorder, which is a type of mental illness. And just to be clear, I'm not against being skinny or something stupid like that, but if you'd read that page I linked, anorexia quite literally means that you can't accept your body, and are constantly trying to get skinnier, often to the point of starving yourself. If you have come to accept your body, then you've been cured of anorexia, with the next step (if it's severe enough) being to start eating enough food so that your internal organs won't try to digest themselves.

Oh god…
ANYTHING BUT IRONY!

I'm saying it may not be in a few more years (just like gays and trans were delisted as mental disorders).

{ anorexia quite literally means that you can’t accept your body, and are constantly trying to get skinnier, often to the point of starving yourself }

Gender dysphoria quite literally means that you can't accept your body and are constantly trying to be more like another gender, often to the point of mutilating yourself if surgical opens aren't avaliable.

Are you cured of gender dysphoria if you accept an altered body? Is the next step to return your altered body, which is the reason you except it, back to its former gender, since you're cured? Sooo why exactly do you think an anorexic girl who is happy with her altered body would remain happy if she started gaining back all the "healthy weight"?
