About

NOPE is a 2022 film by acclaimed director Jordan Peele, returning to his roots as a writer director of an original horror concept after his previous film, the Candyman reboot. The film's promotional material and release purposely kept the plot shrouded in mystery, reminiscent of Us.

History

On July 22nd, 2021, Jordan Peele released the poster for the movie, which also acted as the title review and staring cast list. The reveal, showing a cloud with a string of flags coming down from it, instantly caught the attention of Peele fans, who could tell he was returning to his mysterious roots with something imaginative, causing the Tweet[1] to get over 500,000 likes in one year (shown below).

On February 13th, 2022, the official trailer for the movie was uploaded to the Universal Pictures YouTube channel[2], where it appeared to act as an ad-within-an-ad before slowly devolving into Peele's unique brand of chaotic dissonance, further exciting his fanbase and causing the trailer to be viewed over 23 million times in six months (shown below).

Online Reactions

With the movie seeing release the week of July 22nd, reviews from both critics and casual theater-goers had one thing in agreement: bewilderment at what they had just witnessed. Not always an uncommon thing with Peele's movies, the inability to properly convey just what was viewed was instantly shown over social media, with Twitter user @MackGalloway34[3] giving a succinct representation of that post-watch feeling, and earning 1,000 likes in three hours (shown below).

Similarly, due to the trailer and film itself placing an emphasis on clouds, people have begun to make posts about clouds and pointing to them as having something sinister involved, as can be seen in the Twitter post by @Scoby20[4], which utilizes the Ralph In Danger template to portray their current paranoia about clouds (shown below).
