The Angelic Yields Trend or Reverse Devious Lick Trend is a TikTok trend where people film themselves returning stolen items or giving new items to their school after taking part in the banned Devious Licks trend, which saw users steal things from school and upload the proof to TikTok. The trend began in late September 2021 following TikTok's removal of videos following the Devious Licks trend.

Origin

On September 1st, 2021, TikToker @jugg4elias posted a video of himself taking a box of disposable masks from his backpack with the caption "a month into school absolutely devious lick. Should've brought a mask from home," gaining over 239,000 views in a week (shown below). It has since been removed. This began the "devious licks" trend, where TikTokers began similarly stealing items from their schools. Some videos are obvious satire where they steal things like their principal, but many others are legitimate. The trend resulted in significant controversy and was reported on by numerous news outlets in mid-September.^[2][3] It was banned on September 16th by TikTok, with all hashtags related to it blocked and all videos taking part in it removed.

On September 17th, TikToker^[1] @j.uher7 posted a video where they enter their school bathroom and place a roll of toilet paper on the toilet (shown below). On-screen text reads, "Just hit the most angelic yield." The video gained over 4.1 million views in three days and appears to be the earliest example of it.

The original angelic yield video inspired a trend where TikTokers film themselves giving back to the school they stole from, often under the original sound^[4] "Smiling All Day Long." On September 18th, 2021, TikTokers^[5][6] @thecountryofsugondesia and @michaelnammour uploaded angelic yield videos giving hand soap back to school washrooms, gaining over 6.7 and 4.7 million views in two days respectively (shown below, left and right).

On the same day, Twitter^[9] user @jarvis posted, "there's a new trend called 'angelic yields' where people atone for their devious licks by giving back to the school" along with a video of TikToker @ssalladd following it, gaining over 4,700 likes and 200 retweets in two days (shown below).

Many of the videos show students giving comedic and out-of-place items back to the school, or stacks of money, usually dropping them off in the bathroom. For example, on September 18th, TikToker^[7] @glaf posted a video putting a coffee machine in the bathroom, gaining over 1.5 million views in two days (shown below, left). On September 19th, TikToker^[8] @nathanmontaque posted a video dropping off $50's in the bathroom, gaining over 3.8 million views in a day (shown below, right).

By September 20th, the hashtag "#angelicyield" gained over 21 million total views, and the original sound was used in over 2,500 videos, many following the trend.
