About
Barack Obama Hydroxychloroquine Conspiracy Theory refers to the implication that President Barack Obama uses hydroxychloroquine based on a photograph of a pill bottle from 2008. The bottle label reads that the prescription is Tovaquone-Proguanil for Barack Obama for the treatment of Malaria. Despite President Donald Trump's endorsement of the drug, health experts determined that hydroxychloroquine is ineffective against the coronavirus.
Origin
On July 10th, 2020, conservative commentator Mark Levin posted a photograph of the pill bottle of the Malaria medication Tovaquone-Proguanil prescribed to President Obama in 2008. Levin tweeted, [1] "Obama's hydroxychloroquine from 2008." Within one week, the tweet received more than 35,000 likes and 22,000 retweets (shown below).
The prescription, however, is not for hydroxychloroquine but rather malarone also known as atovaquone-proguanil, a drug used to prevent malaria.[6]
Spread
The following day, the image bean spreading around the internet. On July 11th, therxforum[2] user SportsBookData posted the picture and wrote, "HYDROXYCHLORIQUINE WAS 'THE BIGGEST GAME CHANGER OF OUR TIME' UNTIL TRUMP SUPPORTED IT. In 2005 Fauci called the 'biggest game changer of our time'. In 2008 Obama took it to protect him from Malaria. Hydroxy IS the therapeutic and cure for COVID and many other viruses and diseases. Everyone knew it and used it with tremendous success until Trump supported it! WHAT CHANGED? Logical thinking" (shown below, left).
Tigerdroppings.com[3] user bamarep posted the image with the comment, "I thought this drug that's been readily available for decades would kill you. Surely if it were that deadly they would let the Messiah Lord Hussein Soetoro Jug Ears fricknuts Obama take it and risk losing his calming impact on our society. Surely not. The lying mfers blocking widescale use of this should be rope dragged down Madison Ave" (shown below, center).
Others argued that the pill bottle does not mean anything. Writer Brianna Wu tweeted,[4] "OUTRAGED that Obama took an anti-malarial drug to treat potential malaria with a doctor's supervision before #Covid_19 even existed."
On July 13th, 2020, journalist Yashar Ali retweeted Levin and wrote,[5] "Let's assume this photo is authentic…The bottle indicates the prescription was filled in July 2008. That month, Obama went to Afghanistan which has a high rate of Malaria. So he took an anti-Malarial to avoid contracting Malaria." The tweet received more than 22,000 likes and 3,600 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below).
Several media outlets wrote about the reaction to the photograph, including Heavy.com[6] and The Daily Dot. [7]
