Chara Possessing Frisk or Story of Undertale "Despicable Me" refers to a series of memes in which captions about convincing someone to do something, often to their detriment, are placed alongside an edited clip of Chara whispering into Frisk's ear to possess him from the Undertale The Musical video, replacing the song "Story of Undertale" with "Despicable Me" from the animated movie of the same name. The "Despicable Me" edit, in which the characters sing, "I'm having a bad bad day," was first posted to YouTube in November 2023 and memes using the clip were popularized on TikTok in December of that year, leading into January 2024.

Origin

On November 11th, 2023, YouTuber^[1] pipo posted a video editing a scene from the 2016 Undertale fan video by YouTuber^[2] LHUGUENY "♪ UNDERTALE THE MUSICAL – Animation Song Parody" where Chara whispers to Fisk, replacing the song "Story of Undertale" with "Despicable Me" by Pharrell Williams, garnering over 149,000 views in two months (shown below).

Spread

The "Despicable Me" edit gained viral spread on TikTok in December 2023 and January 2024, often alongside captions about convincing someone to do something. For example, on January 4th, 2024, TikToker^[3] @myuserissorandom posted a meme in which Chara convinces Frisk that the Dancing Toothless meme is unfunny, garnering over 350,000 views in a week (shown below).

On January 9th, TikToker^[4] @live_laugh_love_berdly posted a version of the meme about forcing a friend to play a game you like, garnering over 700,000 views in three days (shown below, left). On January 10th, TikToker^[5] @eletric_.siren posted a version of the meme about two siblings convincing their guardian to get them McDonald's that gained over 650,000 views in two days (shown below, right).

Some TikTokers also reanimated the scene with new characters. For example, on January 11th, TikToker^[6] @badmr.kitty posted a version of the meme reanimating the scene with Eric Cartman and Butters from South Park, garnering over 97,000 views in a day (shown below).
