About
Circle Pattern in Back of Throat refers to the presence of a red circle pattern on the soft palate inside the throat that sometimes appears on a person after giving a man oral sex. The circle, known as Fellatio-Associated Erythema of the Soft Palate, is a form of petechiae bruising and first went viral on TikTok in 2021 as users made videos claiming that dentists can tell if you've given oral sex by the presence of the circle. Similar videos went viral again in December 2022.
Origin
On June 11th, 2018 NCBI[1] published an article titled, "Fellatio-associated erythema of the soft palate: an incidental finding during a routine dental evaluation." The article claims that fellatio may cause a red circle on the soft palate of the throat, explaining:
The contact of the palate with the penile glands may cause a haematoma due to blunt trauma and dilatation of the blood vessels because of the negative pressure created while sucking. Considering these facts, it is important to know that oral sex can affect the oral mucosa and increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, syphilis and human papillomavirus.
On February 2nd, 2021, TikToker[2] @cianmcbrien posted a video of himself with a shocked expression under the caption, "JUST FOUND OUT THE DENTIST CAN FIND OUT WHETHER SOMEONE HAS GIVEN 🧠 OR NOT I'M SCREAMINGGGGG" garnering over 5.2 million views in just under two years (shown below).

The video by @cainmcbrien inspired further videos sharing shock over the fact, along with videos by dentists confirming it. For example, on February 4th, 2021, TikToker[3] and dentist @thescumbagdad posted a response to the video confirming it, saying, "unless the patient's really young or showing signs of abuse we don't care," garnering over 13 million views in just under two years (shown below). BuzzFeed[4] published an article about the trend that month collecting various videos about it. The Sun[5] published a story about it on February 9th.

2022 Resurgence
On November 20th, 2022, TikToker[6] and dentist @mikidentistry posted a lip dub video where he laughs under the caption, "when u give your patient an oral exam and u see a circle pattern in the back of her throat," garnering over 7.9 million views in a month (shown below).

The video inspired a similar reaction as in 2021, including stories by TikTokers who had experiences with dentists calling them out for the red circle. For example, on December 3rd, TikTokers[7][8] @chelszn444 (shown below) and @themarisazimmerman1 duetted the video with stories about dentists seeing the red circle, garnering over 100,000 and 40,000 views respectively in two weeks. On December 5th, TikToker[9] and dentist @thescumbagdad posted another response to the video, again reiterating that he doesn't care in most cases, garnering over 6 million views in two weeks.
