“It Is Acceptable” is a memorable quote uttered by Darth Vader to Darth Sidious and an exploitable image macro from the 2017 Marvel comic book Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith 1. The quote is used alongside a frame from the comic depicting Vader looking at his hand as a reaction image to an above caption or screenshot, typically to show that something is acceptable or adequate. The meme was popularized on Reddit in late 2020 but also spread to other platforms.
The original scene that the meme originates from is Marvel Comics’ Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith 1, released on June 7th, 2017, specifically the scene where Vader awakens after his defeat on Mustafar and Sidious asks him how he likes his new armor. In the comic strip, Vader replies to Sidious with “It is … acceptable,” which is the same line seen in the meme’s image (seen below).
Although the exact first use of the scene as a meme format is unknown, the earliest known instance was posted by Redditor XFactor759 to the /r/ShitPostCrusaders subreddit on October 1st, 2020, depicting Giorno Giovanna from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. The meme received over 11,500 upvotes, 100 comments and several Reddit Awards in roughly two months (shown below).
