About
"I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Darth Vader from the 1977 sci-fi film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The quote is used alongside a frame from the movie depicting Vader force choking Admiral Motti as a reaction image and exploitable image macro to an above caption, comment or screenshot, usually to denote disapproval of something. It can also be used as a phrasal template where "faith" is swapped with other words.
Origins
The original scene used in the meme is pulled from Episode IV of Star Wars, released on May 25th, 1977, where high-ranking members of the Galactic Empire are seen discussing the theft of important plans for the Death Star. During the scene, Admiral Motti replies to Vader about the "power of the Force" and says, "Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels' hidden fortress," when Vader suddenly begins force choking him as he utters the line "I find your lack of faith disturbing" used in the meme. On October 9th, 2008, YouTuber[1] Edge Adamworth uploaded the scene, receiving over 3.8 million views, 23,000 likes and 5,200 comments in roughly 12 years (seen below).
Although the exact first meme using the scene is unknown, a spike in interest occurred during the period of March to July 2005, due to the release of Star Wars: Episode III. On August 24th, 2007, an xkcd[2] webcomic titled "Excessive Quotation" referenced the original quote, serving as an early memetic example (shown below). A reverse image search on TinEye,[3] shows that the scene first appeared online as a reaction image on April 19th, 2008, on the French website NoFrag but has since been deleted.
Spread
Over the years, other early examples referencing the original catchphrase have appeared in a wide array of formats, including Demotivational Posters (seen below, left and right).
On January 5th, 2020, Redditor Gonzalolikeskaiya posted an example of the meme used as an image macro to the /r/HistoryMemes[4] subreddit, receiving over 1,300 upvotes in six months (shown below, left). On November 2nd, 2020, Redditor LordThedosius posted another example to the /r/PrequelMemes[5] sub, receiving over 2,100 upvotes in three months (shown below, right).
Recreations and References in Pop Culture
There have been many homages and recreations of the original scene from Star Wars over the years. On September 23rd, 2007, Family Guy recreated the scene in its "Blue Harvest" Star Wars special where Stewie replaces Vader (seen below, left).[6] On January 27th, 2012, Xbox released an ad referencing the scene on its YouTube[7] channel under the title "Kinect Star Wars: Girly Vader," receiving over 283,000 views, 1,400 likes and 350 comments in nine years (seen below, right).
