Eating Kit-Kats the Wrong Way refers to the practice of consuming a Kit-Kat chocolate bar by biting directly into it without breaking it into individual sticks as intended. The practice has been mocked online in various ways since 2012.

Origin

The earliest known joke about eating a Kit-Kat incorrectly was posted on Memecenter[1] on May 27th, 2012 paired with a rage comic (shown below).

Jokes about eating Kit-Kats incorrectly appeared regularly online over the coming years. A screenshotted thread from 4chan was posted to /r/4chan on November 10th, 2012[2] gained 810 points (examples shown below).

On July 29th, 2016, a thread appeared on Imgur featuring multiple Kit-Kat[3] bars bitten into (examples shown below). Two more examples were included in a 2016 Buzzfeed[4] post.


Deal-Breaker Jokes

On May 31st, 2018, Twitter user @byrdinator posted a picture of her boyfriend having just taken an "incorrect" bite out of a Kit-Kat bar (shown below). The tweet gained 1,200 retweets.

In response, many Twitter users joked that the bite was a "deal-breaker" and that she should break up with her boyfriend. Notably, CNN anchor Jake Tapper tweeted just that (shown below, left). Dictionary.com did the same (shown below, right). The jokes were covered by Twitter Moments.[5]
