English Teachers Are Always Pregnant refers to a prominent stereotype that suggests school English teachers both in the United States and worldwide get pregnant significantly more often and are therefore more frequently absent from their teaching jobs compared to other teachers from subjects such as math. Started by a viral tweet posted in 2020, the joke about English teachers always being pregnant inspired multiple memes throughout the early 2020s.
Origin
On August 17th, 2020, X[1] / Twitter user @TYRIQUE95 posted a humorous observation about school teachers, writing, "Why are maths teachers never sick and English teachers always pregnant." The post (shown below) garnered over 144,000 reposts and 977,000 likes in five years.

Spread
The post saw viral spread as screenshots of it were widely circulated online in 2020 and the following years, helping to popularize the cliche and concept.
On December 4th, 2020, an unknown Redditor posted the earliest discovered meme based on the joke in the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit (post since removed). On December 4th, 2020, the GIF caption meme was reuploaded to iFunny[2] (shown below).

On April 15th, 2021, an unknown Redditor posted another GIF caption meme based on the joke in the /r/teenagers[3] subreddit, where it gained over 16,000 upvotes in four years (shown below).

Multiple memes based on the observation were posted on Reddit and other sites through the first half of the 2020s.
For example, on June 21st, 2022, Redditor SSprobs posted an Endless Cycle meme that received over 9,400 upvotes in the /r/memes[4] subreddit in three years (shown below).

On August 29th, 2023, TikTok[5] user @urfacesfloppedgetoverit posted a video caption meme that garnered over 642,000 likes in two years (shown below).
