Overview
ESPN 8: The Ocho is an annual day of programming on ESPN2 in which the network showcases unique and seldom-seen sports. The name is inspired by the 2004 film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, in which a dodgeball tournament is broadcast on a parody ESPN channel called "ESPN 8: The Ocho."
Background
In Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, released June 18th, 2004,[1] the film's climactic dodgeball tournament is broadcast on a parody ESPN channel called ESPN 8: The Ocho. The announcers for the channel are Cotton McKnight and Pepper Brooks, and Brooks is the origin of the Bold Move Cotton meme.
Developments
On August 4th, 2017, ESPN[2] announced that it would run an "ESPN 8: The Ocho" day of programming on August 8th on their subsidiary channel, ESPNU, to showcase "Seldom Seen Sports." That day, they showcased Disc Golf, Ultimate Trampoline Dodgeball & Firefighters World Challenge among others (highlights shown below, left). The following year, they ran another "ESPN 8: The Ocho" day[3] which featured darts, chess boxing, cornhole, eating competitions, and others. It ran on ESPN2.
The 2019 edition of the day aired August 7th, 2019, and featured Head Tennis, competitive cherry-pit spitting, slippery stairs climbing, competitive pizza tossing, and Jelle's Marble Runs (shown below). The 2019 edition was covered in a Twitter Event.[4]
