Overview

Colty's Blue Food Coloring Experiment refers to a series of TikTok videos in which Canadian TikToker @coltyy ingests a bottle of blue food coloring a day and shares the side effects. The videos which continued for over nine days went viral on TikTok and Twitter with many people copying the experiment to see whether their urine turns blue.

Background

On February 5th, 2020, @coltyy uploaded his first video in which he drinks blue food coloring. In the video, he says that he will only be drinking food coloring and water over the next week (shown below). The video gained over 330,400 likes in 13 days.

Developments

On February 7th, @coltyy uploaded another TikTok video in which he announces that he is on day three of the challenge and that his urine is beginning to change color (shown below, left). The video garnered over 466,900 likes in 11 days. On February 14th, @coltyy uploaded a short day eight update saying that his urine is very blue and his skin might be turning blue (shown below, right). The video received over 259,600 likes in four days.

On February 15th, Twitter user @molllieblu[2] tweeted, "there is a man on tiktok who has been drinking nothing but blue food coloring for 4 days straight to see if it will make him turn blue…. what" (shown below). Various other Twitter users began commenting on the "trend."

On February 16th, TikToker @coltyy gave a rundown of what has happened in his 11 days of drinking food coloring. He announced that both his urine and feces were blue and that his skin is blue (shown below). The video gained over 300,900 likes in two days. Paper Magazine[1] covered the story and advised against ingesting that much food coloring.
