Overview
Conan Gray "I'm a Lesbian" Tweet refers to a controversial 2018 social media post made by American singer-songwriter Conan Gray. The tweet, which launched a backlash known as #conanisoverparty, went viral two years later. Many confused the #conanisoverparty for other subjects, such as Conan O'Brien and the coronavirus.
Background
On April 19th, 2020, Twitter[1] user @oddeyejeno screen-captured a 2018 tweet from Gray that reads, "boys r ugly and so so stinky that's why I'm a lesbian!" @oddeyejeno commented, "@conangray so brave saying this then few minutes later it’s 'tweets arent loading right now' 😢😢."
About 10 minutes later, Gray responded to the tweet. He wrote, "realized the tweet was extremely dumb. learned that it perpetuates a stereotype that is harming the lgbtq+ community, which is the opposite of what i want to do. was a big mistake." The tweet received more than 1,900 likes and 130 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below).

The tweet inspired a social media hashtag #ConanIsOverParty, which featured people defending and criticizing Gray. That day, Twitter[2] user @lovesreliegion tweeted,[2] "since conan gray gets cancelled every single month i’m going to make this thread to highlight all his problematic tweets and things." The tweet received more than 1,800 likes and 300 retweets (shown below, left). Twitter[3] user @vikrockwell tweeted, "#conanisoverparty y’all wanna cancel my king conan gray.. when y’all talk about how men shit all the time and say stuff like this on the regular.. I CANNOT STAND YALL 😭." The tweet received more than 3,500 likes and 350 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
Confusion
Many online were confused by the hashtag, particularly in regards to which "Conan" the tag referred. Twitter user @OmegaCrashExtra tweeted,[4] "Omfg I thought Conan O'Brien was cancelled I almost had a heart attack #conanisoverparty." The tweet received more than 7,000 likes and 550 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).
Twitter[5] user @sheepcuties tweeted an image of the anime character "Detective Conan." They wrote, "finally we’re canceling this problematic child." The tweet received more than 2,300 likes and 345 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
