About
Halls Preto in Portuguese or Halls Negras in Spanish refers to an internet trend that arose due to reports of eating the candy leading to allegedly excellent results during oral sex. The rumor went viral in Latin American countries around May 2017, leading to a series of ironic memes on social media.
Origin
On May 30th, 2017, the Peruvian news website Perú 21[1] posted an article commenting on the sudden interest in the Halls Negras candy on the internet. The post details a rumor about the mint candy augmenting pleasure during oral sex, which lead to the appearance of these candies in some sex shops in Mexico since February 2017. On February 11th, 2017, the Mexican news website Debate[2] shared an image of a Facebook group dedicated to the mint candy (seen below)
Spread
Over the next few years, the Halls Negras candy became more commonly related to oral sex jokes in ironic memes on social media. For example, on April 13th, 2017, a Facebook[3] page dedicated to Halls Negras memes posted an image of the candy with the overlay text in Spanish "He who does not know God, prays to any saint." The meme (seen below, left) received 234 likes and 41 shares in seven years. Twitter[4] user @aniquilante also posted a meme showing the feeling of having oral sex with the mint candy. The post (seen below, right), uploaded on April 29th, 2019, garnered 1,833 likes and 239 retweets in four years.
Brazilians have also been using the Halls Preto candy to post ironic memes on the internet unrelated to the sexual connotation. For instance, the official Brazilian Facebook[5] page of the candy @HallsBrasil posted on May 25th, 2021, posted a meme of the The Silent Protector with the Portuguese overlayed text "Me going to work without brushing my teeth." The post (seen below) garnered 10,000 likes and 812 retweets in two years.
