I Am a Grown Man, I'm a Big Adult, I Can Do This refers to an exploitable comic of a man hyping himself up, telling himself he can "do it" because he's an adult, then sitting at a computer, watching something sad, and crying.

Origin

On June 29th, 2018, bananatwinky posted the original comic to their Tumblr^[7] page, garnering over 15,800 notes in roughly 2 years (shown below, left). On September 10th, 2019, Banana Twinky shared another version of the comic to their Twitter^[8] page (shown below, right).

Spread

On October 9th, 2018, History Memes PH uploaded a version of the meme to Facebook^[1] referencing a film titled "Heneral Luna," garnering over 1,000 reactions and 850 shares in 2 years (shown below).

On October 15th, 2018, ONE PIECE Fanpage posted another version of the image to Facebook,^[2] this time using a scene from the anime One Piece in place of the "Heneral Luna" footage, garnering over 15,000 reactions, 4,400 shares, and 2,200 comments in 2 years (shown below, left). On the same day, /u/madhavimonogatari uploaded a blank template of the image to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial.^[3] On October 16th, VandelayIndustriesSalesMan uploaded a version of the meme featuring a sad scene from Scrubs to imgur,^[4] garnering over 1,800 vies and 60 upvotes in 2 years (shown below, right).

On July 31st, 2019, /u/Punisher2003 uploaded a version of the image referencing the opening scene in the Disney Pixar film "Up" to /r/memes,^[5] garnering over 23,000 upvotes in a year (shown below, left). On December 15th, 2020, /u/drm8825 uploaded a version of the meme to /r/me_irl^[6] using a sad comic about a dead baby duck in place as the source of the tears, garnering over 1,400 upvotes in 21 days (shown below, right).
