About

Instead Of Going To Therapy refers to a snowclone popular on Twitter with the formation "Men will literally X instead of going to therapy." In the jokes, X is usually a reference to a particular person, historical event, or activity associated with men.

Origin

On July 30th, 2020, Twitter user @SpencerKavlan[1] tweeted the earliest known iteration of the snowclone, tweeting "Men will literally defend an entire civilization from ruin in two world wars, start and provide for a family, produce masterworks of art and culture, and then just NOT go to therapy smdh," gaining over 120 likes (shown below). The tweet is a parody of posts that enumerate toxic things men will do to avoid going to therapy.[2]

Spread

The format saw a brief resurgence in October of 2020. One of the most notable posts from that time was tweeted by @sh44sti,[3] who on October 6th, tweeted, "men will literally found the timurid empire and be heralded as one of history’s greatest military commanders and tacticians instead of go to therapy," gaining over 300 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, left). However, it was not until late December 2020 and early January 2021 that the format reached the peak of its popularity. On December 30th, 2020, user @lisatomic[4] tweeted, "men will literally learn everything about ancient Rome instead of going to therapy," gaining over 14,000 retweets and 155,000 likes (shown below, right).

Other popular posts from January of 2021 include a post by @BecksWelker[5] making fun of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers after he lost the NFC championship game, gaining over 500 retweets and 6,700 likes (shown below, left). User @zachsilberberg[6] tweeted a Bernie Sanders In A Chair meme using the snowclone, gaining over 30 retweets and 450 likes (shown below, right). The meme has been covered by multiple news outlets, including the Daily Dot,[7] Buzzfeed[8] and Mel Magazine.[9]
