iPhone Ringtone Cat is a video of an illustrated cat with a smug face and singing the default iPhone ringtone, titled "Opening." Since its initial surge in popularity, the cat has been edited to sing other songs.

Origins

On November 23rd, 2023, TikTok user alwx^[1] uploaded a video of a cat singing the iPhone ringtone, simply titled 'wa wa wa wa wo wa wo wa wa wa wo' (shown below). It has since gained over 524,000 views and 139,000 likes in five months. The audio was sourced from a video titled 'iPhone Ringtone Opening but by a Cat' by Meowchestra, a fellow TikTok user.

Spread

As the video became popular on TikTok, it became a meme on Twitter after being reposted there several times. For example, on December 3rd, 2023, user @TheCumpound^[2] reposted it and gained over 9,000 retweets and 41,000 likes in five months (shown below).

@TheCumpound's tweet proved a jumping-off point for YTPMV-styled video edits posted of the video, as many variations appeared in the comments or as a quote retweets of the post. This helped the meme spread widely on the app and on YouTube. For example, on December 5th, Twitter user @Sharkfacegi^[3] posted a variation using the song "Jumper" from the Castle Crashers OST, gaining over 1,400 retweets and 5,900 likes in five months (shown below, top). On December 12th, YouTuber Suzie^[4] posted a version with the cat singing "God-ish" by DECO*27 and PinocchioP, gaining over 463,000 views in four months (shown below, bottom).
