About

"Its Not That Deep" is an image macro, often a tongue-in-cheek reaction, depicting nothing but rough water and the head of a man sunken up to his chin, appearing displeased but relatively calm. The words "Its Not That Deep" are imposed as bottom text.

It was originally used in a self-deprecating way to poke fun at oneself when overthinking, but quickly began being used as a way belittle people who seem to be making up things just for the sake of being mad about them.

These usages are counter-intuitive, given that the image itself implies that "It" is in fact quite deep--perhaps stemming from the idea that one has chosen to go up to their necks in something unnecessarily, and perhaps has taken the poster with them. Or that it is that deep, but the poster doesn't want to seriously acknowledge its depth. Or just taking the text at face value and appreciating the humorous nature of the image despite the implied sarcasm of the words themselves.

Origin

Unknown.[1]

Spread

Several edited variations came into popular use, such as "Its That Deep" (where the man's head and "Not" are simply edited over with the water texture), and "Wa🅱️er" (where the text is edited over with the word "Water" and iterated with the B Button Emoji meme).

[1] Yes, I realize this is quite an incomplete entry. I've made it because I'm flabbergasted that no matter how much I searched, I couldn't find this entry--despite finding several iterations of it hybridized with other memes. I beg of anyone reading this to add more information and for someone more seasoned with this website to clean up my paltry attempt at an article. I intend to gather as many iterations as I can and add them as variations sometime this week.

I'm not sure how this site is formatted, so in my reluctance to reupload images already hosted here, I'll add them as links now that I know there's moderators for new entries and I don't know how to format images in an editor like this.
