About

Me Getting Euthanized refers to a viral tweet posted in late January 2024 by former Dutch YouTuber Lauren Hoeve moments before she was euthanized after years of suffering from severe myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS). The post includes a meme that shows a kid wearing sunglasses in a dentist clinic paired with the caption "Me getting euthanized," which quickly went viral across Reddit, Facebook, X and TikTok due to its circumstances.

Origin

Although the meme went viral in January 2024, its origin dates back to June 26th, 2016, when X / Twitter user @milf_lawyer[1] posted a picture of a kid wearing sunglasses doing a thumbs-up sign while in a dentist appointment (shown below, left). The tweet was accompanied by the caption "Me getting euthanized," which amassed over 660 likes and 410 retweets in eight years.

The picture used in the meme was first uploaded on Facebook[2] on November 23rd, 2013, by user Kasinão (shown below, right), which amassed nearly 90 likes and two shares in 11 years.

Spread

The meme was often shared solely on X over the years until former Dutch YouTuber Lauren Hoeve decided to humorously share her last moments alive by posting the "me getting euthanized" meme[3] on January 30th, 2024. In the post, she reiterates that this was her last tweet and she is "going to rest a bit more and be with my loved ones. Enjoy a last morbid meme from me," she wrote. The post (shown below, left) amassed over 16,000 likes and 2,400 retweets in a week.

A few days later, on February 2nd, Hoeve's parents released a statement on her X[4] account (shown below, right) saying she passed away peacefully a few hours after she posted her viral tweet. The post also explains the Dutch woman suffered for years from severe myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), which is a rare disease characterized by profound fatigue, sleep abnormalities, pain and other symptoms that are made worse by exertion.

Lauren @dutchlauren. Follow This will be my last tweet. Thanks for the love, everyone. I'm going to rest a bit more and be with my loved ones. Enjoy a last morbid meme from me. Me getting euthanized X 7:13 AM Jan 27, 2024 Ⓡ Statement for the media and international community on the passing of Lauren Hoeve. 31 January 2024 Lauren passed away peacefully on January 27, 2024, at age 28. She requested euthanasia after years of unbearable suffering caused by severe myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS). Lauren's family and loved ones are touched and overwhelmed by the interest and support from the media and the public. However, Lauren believed that our attention should be on the living. Millions of people are affected by ME/CFS, with no established treatment pathways and no cure. Why is their suffering acknowledged enough for euthanasia but not enough to fund clinical research? We are therefore encouraging you to support initiatives which advocate for ME patients. Some of these include the Open Medicine Foundation and ME Action Network. We ask you to respect the privacy of Lauren's family in this difficult time. For media inquiries please contact hersenmist@gmail.com. Lauren's parents, Leonie and Peter.

The Dutch woman's death became a trending topic on social media as people shared her last meme on X and other details about her euthanasia. For example, on February 5th, 2024, X[5] user @seanfeucht replied to Hoeve's post saying she was "euthanized for a vague and made up illness while people cheer her on to her death." The post (shown below, left) received more than 65 likes and 17 retweets in a day.

On February 6th, 2024, X[6] user @SquidMechanicus also criticized the Dutch woman's decision, saying, "The system was able to convince this person that life wasn't worth living because of her condition." The post (shown below, right), garnered roughly 610 likes and 60 retweets in a few hours.

Sean Feucht @seanfeucht Follow X If a post could illuminate how sick, twisted and demonic our culture is, then this may be it. A 28 year old woman posts a meme before she is euthanized for a vague and made up illness while people cheer her on to her death. What a dark world we live in. Lauren @dutchlauren This will be my last tweet. Thanks for the love, everyone. I'm going to rest a bit more and be with my loved ones. Enjoy a last morbid meme from me. We're definitely living in a sane and normal society and not a decadent cult of death. X Lauren @dutchlauren This will be my last tweet. Thanks for the love, everyone. I feel like this is going to be one of those situations where the brain trusts on Twitter barely examine a very complicated, morally fraught situation, then formulate the hottest, most dramatic, and most grandstanding take they can in the shortest amount of time to support their own personal politics. Twitter is absolutely not the place to discuss something as divisive as euthanasia.
