Men / Women Don't Understand Just How Expensive This Is is a catchphrase on Twitter that was widely parodied in August 2023. After an initial post suggested men don't understand the monetary investment in skincare or beauty products, users repeated the catchphrase, usually flipping it to be about women, showing photos of expensive hobbies, like figurine collecting and video games.
Origin
On August 8th, 2023, Twitter user @PRADAXBBY[1] posted a picture of numerous skincare products, writing, "men don't understand just how expensive this is." The tweet gained 10,000 retweets, 72,000 likes and 4,900 quote-tweets, largely from people posting parodies of it, in two days (shown below).

The tweet was quickly parodied by other users on the platform, often by showing a picture of another expensive, more frivolous hobby. For example, on August 9th, 2023, Twitter user @GarlicCorgi[2] posted a picture showing a pile of empty beer cans, gaining over 190 retweets and 3,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). The same day, user @airbagged[3] posted an example featuring Warhammer 40,000 miniatures, gaining 14 retweets and 190 likes in the same timeframe (shown below, right).


Other viral examples include an August 9th, tweet by Twitter user @killmefam[5] showing a steak dinner that gained over 50 retweets and 580 likes in one day (shown below, left) and an August 10th tweet by user @GarbageApe[4] featuring DLC for the video game Crusader Kings II that gained over 220 retweets and 2,000 likes in one hour (shown below, right).
