About
Modded Facial Animations refers to a series of videos in which video game modders tinker with games such that characters expressions become extremely exaggerated. Videos featuring the mods in numerous different video games have gained millions of views on YouTube.
Origin
On November 22nd, 2015, YouTube user and modder FancyPants uploaded a video showing off the "immersive facial animation" mod for Fallout 4 in which each character's expression was exaggerated, gaining over 402,000 views (shown below).
Spread
The same day, YouTuber penguinz0 posted their results with the mod, gaining over 2 million views (shown below, left). The following day, user Open World Games posted their results, gaining over 375,000 views (shown below, right).
One of the most influential users in spreading the style was YouTuber DPO23. On August 25th, 2017, they posted their first example, using the game Heavy Rain (shown below). One week later, they posted another video with even more exaggerated facial expressions, gaining over 2 million views (shown below, right).
In early 2019, DPO23 gained millions of views again with the Resident Evil 2 Remake (examples shown below).
User Peterscraps also contributed some widely-viewed examples, using SFMs of Team Fortress 2 (examples shown below).
