About

Nico Nico Medleys (Japanese: ニコニコメドレーシリーズ) refer to a series of musical medley videos consisting of popular songs on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND).

The original video was created by Shimo (しも), a user of the site. After he started making the medleys, other people joined in on the fun and now, more than 15,000 Kumikyoku videos can be found on Nico Nico Douga and more versions can be found on other video sharing sites such as Youtube and Dailymotion.

Original Series

Nico Nico Douga Chuudoku no Kata e Okuru Ikkyoku (ニコニコ動画中毒の方へ贈る一曲), the ever first video, was uploaded on Nico Nico Douga on June 5, 2007.

A second medley was uploaded on June 23 of the same year and was called Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga (組曲『ニコニコ動画』). This medley is considered the most popular in the series.

The second version's views launched to over 1.8 million in no more than 2 months. From July to August in 2007, the video maintained first position in number of views, with over 3.3 million comments, and was in over 100,000 Japanese mylists at the height of its popularity. Its popularity sky-rocketed even more through the popularity of the series' subsequent videos.

On September 9, 2007, the original author uploaded Nico Nico Douga Monogatari.wav (ニコニコ動画物語.wav). Because of its length, there is no single video for it on Youtube and is instead broken up into three parts. To see a full version, go here.

On April 11, 2008, the original author uploaded Nico Nico Douga Ryuuseigun (ニコニコ動画流星群).

The last official video was titled Nanairo no Nico Nico Douga (七色のニコニコ動画) and was uploaded on June 3, 2009.

Derivatives

A site called Nico Nico Douga Medley Database features a good number of derivatives. Their Youtube counterpart is called KumikyokuNND.

On December 26, 2007, Lantis, a Japanese music company, published 「らき☆すたRe-Mix002〜『ラキスタノキワミ、アッー』【してやんよ】〜」, a mixed music collection based on the hit animé series, Lucky Star. One of the songs in the collection, 「組曲『らき☆すた動画』」, was to pay tribute to the creativity of Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga.
