Not so fun fact: The Aztecs needed POWs for human sacrifice and kept an entire nation of people (the Taxcala) as human cattle. They were usually rounded up in periodic wars called "Flower Wars" where the goal was not to kill but to incapacitate and capture. Cortez once asked Monctezuma II why he didn't just exterminate the Taxcala if they were so hostile to Aztec rule and he said, nonchalantly, that it was more useful to keep them surrounded and let their numbers replenish every few years and then cull them for sacrifice.

It should come as no surprise that the Taxcala (and virtually every other central Mexican people) sided with the Spanish against the Aztecs.

Cortez was basically a pirate who directly disobeyed the Spanish authority and murdered thousands… It is really saying something that the Azteca were so bad that it made the army of Cortez look good by comparison, so the opressed tribes joined him en masse. This is the real reason they were able to conquer the Azteca, not just guns germs and steel.
