About

John McGinnis is a Canadian TikToker best known for videos where he eats food and then dances with one arm in front of his body and the other arm pumping in the air. McGinnis started posting these dance videos regularly in September 2021 and quickly gained a large following as they went viral. The dance is set to the Russian song "Я буду ебать" by Moreart. As of October 15th, 2021, McGinnis has 4.3 million followers on TikTok.

History

McGinnis posted his first video to TikTok[1] on April 27th, 2020, in which he holds his earlobe against his ear and then drops it at a beat drop (shown below, left). McGinnis would continue to post content regularly, often skits and lip dubs to popular sounds and videos where he eats food. On May 2nd, McGinnis posted a video where he opens a box of Tim Hortons Tim Bits, gaining over 270,000 views in a year (shown below, right).

Much of McGinnis' content features him eating food over sounds and using funny filters to alter his face (examples shown below, left and right).

Dance Videos

On September 15th, 2021, McGinnis posted a video to TikTok[2] where he takes a bite of a Subway sandwich, then stands up, puts one arm horizontally in front of his body with an open palm then does a chopping, fist-pumping motion with the other arm in time with the song "Я буду ебать", smiling the whole time (shown below). The video gained over 8.2 million views in a month. It is inspired by a video posted to TikTok[3] by @iamneffatijayden on September 11th where he eats a sausage roll and does a similar dance.

McGinnis continued to post these dance videos in combination with his regular content, many of them going viral. His most popular dance video was posted on September 28th and shows McGinnis doing the dance over a plate of macaroni and cheese, gaining over 68 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On October 4th he posted a video dancing over a plate of broccoli and cheese, gaining over 60 million views in a week (shown below, right).

Online Presence

McGinnis' content has received many reactions across social media and is often praised. He has also inspired other TikTokers to do the dance. On October 7th, TikToker @totouchanemu posted a video doing the dance, directly thanking McGinnis for it, gaining over 24 million views in a week (shown below).

On October 8th, 2021, the H3 Podcast reacted to McGinnis' videos in an episode that garnered over 1.2 million views in a week (shown below).



On October 11th, TikToker @thispronto posted a video eating food and doing the dance, gaining over 15.7 million views in four days (shown below, left). He continued to post videos doing the dance over the following days, each gaining millions of views (example shown below, right).
