About

Planetina is a female superhero character and parody of Captain Planet featured in season five, episode three of Rick and Morty. She is summoned via four elemental rings owned by the "Tina-teers," who she refers to as her children, and protects the earth from environmental danger. In the episode, Planetina starts a relationship with Morty, though they break up in the same episode. Planetina quickly became a fan-favorite character, inspiring numerous works of fan art, rule 34 and memes about her. She is voiced by Allison Brie.

Origin

Planetina appears in season five, episode three of Rick and Morty, titled "A Rickconvenient Mort," which first aired on July 4th, 2021. The episode's cold open, which introduces the character as an environmental superhero and clear parody of Captain Planet, was uploaded to the Adult Swim YouTube[1] channel on July 3rd, garnering over 3 million views in a week (shown below).

In the episode, Morty and Planetina enter a relationship after she defeats a rat-like alien in front of him and Rick. Planetina introduces Morty to the Tina-teers, a group of four middle-aged people with elemental rings used to summon Planetina when there's a threat of environmental harm (shown below). This is a parody of Captain Planet's "Planeteers," who summon him in the same way.

The Tina-teers are abusive towards Planetina and use her for money, treating her like an object. Seeing this, Morty decides to kill all of the Tina-teers to free Planetina. Once free, however, Planetina has nobody to reign her in. Planetina starts committing acts of eco-terrorism, which Morty objects to, particularly the destruction of a mine resulting in at least 300 deaths. At the end of the episode, Morty admits he killed the Tina-teers, Planetina confesses her love for Morty, and he ultimately decides they need to break up.

Spread

The episode received positive reception from many Rick and Morty fans, who praised it as a notably emotional episode in the series.

Planetina inspired numerous works of fan art and rule 34 over the following days across social media, many posted to Twitter[3] and DeviantArt[4] (examples from each shown below respectively).
