Saving the Princess is a common trope for Storybook, Film, and mostly Video Game Hero's. This quest for love has been overused to the point of parody.
Origin
It is not known when the trend started, as nobody has ever recorded the first princess kidnapping, but it likely happened around the medieval era, where young men would strive to become knights and save fair maidens from terrifying beasts.
Spread
It spread to Video Games rather quickly, as it's a rather simple goal for the player to get behind with the character.
