He wants the option of taking it to sea, but wants to hop from port to port, or whatever the term is when you're a house boat. Slip hopping? no_fucking_boats 1d We have a prenup. So whatever he wants, he buys with his money. Whatever I want is bought with my money. Nothing we own is communal property. It's legally his, or mine. We will buy things for each other or give each other money. But legally, his stuff is his. My stuff is mine. Nothing is ours. So that's why the his boat/my land was the most rational compromise. I can't have child ren, and we don't want children. Honestly, we are such loners that we would have separate houses. He said if we had the money he would by half a duplex, and I could buy the other. We want to live remotely, remember. We are minimalist when it comes to socializing. We only do it because you go insane if you don't. Since we are the same breed of loner, it makes since to build a partnership. We get the benefits of not living alone, but understand we are only socializing because we have to. We don't do normal couple stuff I suppose. We talk about what situations we need to prepare for if we moved out to Alaska, we don't do dinner an dancing. We have no friends. Just two antisocial peas in a weird little pod.

Daily power use, such as a water pump to fill the sink, would be supplied by a bank of batteries and hooked up to inverters for larger appliances. The batteries would be charged by solar panels and when we run the generator it would also charge them. This is a very similar setup to what I grew up with, only we also had a wind generator that charged the batteries. I'm not looking to set out across the ocean in some version of Up on water. I would be nice though to have the mobility to come into town for a week to stock up and then go find some quiet area and explore for a couple months Are there things I haven't yet considered? I'm very sure there are a ton! But it's fun to brainstorm and research the possibilities, even if they are extremely unlikely Everyone just needs to calm down. Dream big then get realistic: I don't start out an idea/brainstorm thinking "What's realistically possible?" I start by thinking "In a perfect world, what would want?" I drew out a rough draft of what the ideal setup could look like and that's how I started with a 2.5 story houseboat design. From there l start breaking it down to what's realistic. Would a large 2.5 story floathouse hold up to the wind and waves of Alaska? Nope, but it could be badass on a lake. So then redesign I am a massive researcher into any thing I look at. But maybe because I work it backwards that my wife is freaked. Much like how I approach brainstorming I start big and work down. My research on hull types, engines, and fun stuff comes before getting down to the grit of maintenance costs, insurance, and licensing. Rest assured though, I do get there. I get down to details like replacement parts and if I use the same motor on the houseboat as the skiff then if one breaks I can swap out the other. But if I run diesel inboards on the houseboat then that means extra spare parts and separate fuel to cover the gasoline outboard on the skiff. But the fuel efficiency and reliability of the diesels, etc...etc... And once I think I've completely researched a topic soup to nuts and have formulated my plan I present my information to multiple 3rd parties for their inputs. My rough idea (as it currently stands) in simple form: Buy a steel barge. I've found them ranging from $80,000 for a 120' x 30' x 7' to $33,500 for a 48' x 24' x 5'. Build a, significantly reinforced, house on it. Which would contain things like a wood burning stove, propane appliances, an attached greenhouse, and yes it could even have a chicken coop somewhere. (The goat seems a bit much but the wife loves goat cheese.) I'm not taking some rickety shack either. It would look good and more than pass building codes as well I'm not saying would do this all alone, I am under no illusions about the work required and the need to bring in professionals when needed, like for electric work.

Point #1- The odds of any of this talk coming to fruition are a million to one. And I've told my wife that. Wife's 'boat' paranoia: I am not dismissing this. I can appreciate her viewpoint. At the same time, she does not have an aversion to all watercraft. Her initial career in her early 20s would have placed her on a ship nearly all the time. Note, this was after losing her blankey at 6. I am however trying to shift how she classifies "my boat" so she'll look at it differently. Divorce: If I wanted to divorce her I would. Swimming: I have taken swimming lessons and I can swim if my life depends on it, and I have when it did. It is not easy for me as I sink like a damn rock, but I can do it. Fish: I don't like fish, but I don't have a strong dislike either. While living in Alaska I ate a lot of salmon, halibut, etc. A good recipe makes a big difference. But given the opportunity 'lI always choose another meat over fish Alaska: I spent 10+ years living in Alaska. My mother grew up on a remote island there and my dad, as we know, spent a lot of time there hunting, fishing, and trapping. I appreciate what I would be undertaking. Skill sets: I grew up without traditional electricity, running water, and many modern conveniences. For vacations we would load up our horses and head into the mountains for days on end. I've hunted big and small game both on the ground and in the air. Growing up I also spent several years working in construction. I have a very green thumb. We also don't eat fish. We both hate fish as much as I hate boats. So I'm really at a loss why his no swimming no fish-eating ass thinks it's going to live on a boat. And not just any boat. He wants to refit a barge into a house boat. And somehow this costs less than my small plot of land with a small cabin. He said I'm not being logical, but I don't see how we can afford to live on a god damn boat. The land we can grow and hunt our own food. We can build a cheap cabin. F--- me I'm not maintaining a mobile home welded to a barge. I tried to offer a compromise. I get my plot of land with water access. I found some plots that are in our price range with everything I want, and has water access for his house boat. If he wants to live on a boat, I won't stop him. I will not be living on the boat. I tell him that by doing this, it's the best of both worlds. He gets his freedom with the boat, I get mine with my land. We both get our alone time (which won't happen on a boat), and we both get what we want. He comes into "port" and we do normal relationship stuff. He's "out at sea", and I'm living it up playing my side of the mountain. I see that as win-win, he said it wasn't realistic and defeats the purpose of the boat. Well no s---, I'm not living on a boat, this was my attempt at a compromise jack ass. This has been going on for a few days. It got to the point where I told him I don't know what he is expecting of me. I told him why I will never be living on a boat. I told him why land ownership is important to me. [30/f] My husband [33/m] husband wants to live on a boat. He knew I how I felt about boats before he married me. no_fucking_boats 1 day ago relationship_advice 91% upvoted I loathe boats. I hate them more than I hate people. My husband can't swim so I figured there would never be a boat in my future. My husband now wants to live on a house boat. I told him I would rather be homeless. Now, up until this stupid boat came up, we had similar plans for life. We wanted to live somewhere remote, and just live out our lives as homesteading hermits. I had a very unstable upbringing. I never had a permanent home. I never stayed in one place longer than 3 years until I was an adult. I moved every 6-12 months. I had no stability, I had nothing that actually belonged to me. I want a small plot of land so that will always have a home. A home that doesn't move. A home that only changes with the seasons. I want to be able to survive on my own, on my land. By contrast, my husband grew up herding cattle. He sees land as something that will never allow you to leave. I also really hate boats. When I was 6 I was in a sailboat that capsized, and I watched my favorite towel sink down into the gross fish poop water. I was also drowning my mother because my survival instinct was stronger than hers. She lived, but I developed a hate for all boats. My brain says everything that is not a kayak, canoe, or raft, is a disgusting, fishy, rat infested boat that will take everything from you and leave you stranded. This includes ships, yachts, tug boats, barges, you get the picture. I cannot stress how much I hate boats, and make my boat hate known. So whenever the husband wants to talk about his stupid boat, I tell him why I won't be on this stupid boat. He completely dismisses why I hate boats. Boats aren't f------ stable, I want god damn stability, just once in my s----- life. At least if my land is s---, and my cabin is s---, it's my fault.
