Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platform fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games, which was initially released in April 2014. The game features 62 playable characters, referred to as "Legends", each with unique stats, varied loadouts, and cosmetic skins. Memetic content like fan art, image macros and Photoshop edits about the game and its characters has been shared on X and Reddit since 2017.

History

On April 30th, 2014, Blue Mammoth Games released an early access trailer[1] for the Brawlhalla free-to-play 2D platform fighting game. The video[2] (shown below, left) amassed more than 81,000 views and 1,600 likes in a decade. On October 12th, 2017, Brawlhalla was officially released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Steam, iOS, and Android. The game also shared a cinematic trailer[3] (shown below, right) which amassed over 1.6 million views and 44,000 likes in seven years.


Online Presence

The game's fan base has been posting memes and fan art on Reddit, X and Facebook since 2017. For example, on April 29th, 2017, Redditor[4] @ArtemisFowl123 posted a meme to r/Brawlhalla channel using a Penguins of Madagascar meme paired with the macro "When neither of you are hitting attacks so you get confused and just start spamming sigs." The meme (seen below, left) amassed roughly 166 upvotes and 26 comments.

On January 21st, 2019, X[5] user @jadewares uploaded a meme linking Brawlhalla characters with text messages (seen below, right), which amassed over 113 likes and 14 reposts in five years.
