After exiting out into the overworld, Donkey Kong gains access to a Tag Barrel, which shows the other four Kongs, yet to be unlocked, as colorful question marks. The secret is that Donkey Kong does not actually exist on the same plane of reality as the rest of the game, and is merely superimposed on top of it. In a platformer with 3D models but a 2D plane of movement, a semisolid platform is usually something the player must clip through when jumping on it. While a fully 2D platformer can just draw the character in front of it, in a 3D platformer both the character and the platform occupy the same space. 2D However, in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong somehow never visibly clips through anything. Note how he jumps up seemingly in front of the flower, but ends up in the middle of it? How did he not clip through it on the way up? 3D Enters 3D space only upon death The secret is that Donkey Kong does not actually exist on the same plane of reality as the rest of the game. His model is rendered with a separate camera and a 2D image of him is superimposed onto the game world. The Cartographical Elegance of Donkey Kong Country 2 The maps are designed creatively to use each of the 13 level types exactly thrice Mine Bramble 1 Hold 2 Mine Mast 3 Hold 3 Hold 1 Swamp Swamp 2 Deck The Gangplank Galleon's path twists to never use two of the ship themes in a row. Due to being at sea level on the map Crocodile Cauldron can have a shipweck Bramble 2 Krem Quay is an abandoned port, so it can use a large shipwreck to finish off all three ship themes. None of the other areas have sea access so this wraps it up neatly. Coaster 2 Hive 1 Coinster Forest Forest f Coaster 3 Forest 2 Krazy Kremland is in a swamp, allowing the Swamp theme to be finished. Rool flees in his airship, the airship's rope ladder gets caught in some brambles allowing that theme to be concluded Jungle 3 Finally, the Lost World is designed to be in a mountainous underground jungle, allowing the Ice and Lava themes to be finished There is only one castle in the game, but the designers were so set on never using the same theme three times in a row that the castle was designed to be in two parts to have an ice level between them.
