About
DreadOut is a horror-survival genre game developed and published by Digital Happiness. In the game, player will plays as Linda, a high school student to discover an old deserted town with her smartphone and an SLR camera, Linda must battle against terrifying encounters and solve mysterious puzzles which will ultimately determine her fate.
History
On December, 18th 2012, YouTube channel DreadOutgame[1] uploaded a preview short of the game, the video gained 41,876 views in 8 years (shown below).
Two years later, on May, 6th 2014, YouTube channel DreadOutgame[2] released a trailer about the game, the video gained more than 460.000 views in 6 years (shown below).
On May, 14th 2014, the game was officially released and available for Windows, OS X, and Linux via Steam [3].
DreadOut 2
On February, 10th 2020, Digital Happiness from their YouTube DreadOutgame[8] announced that DreadOut will have a sequel named "DreadOut 2" by released an official trailer (shown below). Meanwhile the game itself was released on February, 22nd 2020 via Steam [9]
Receptions
The game released to average reviews due to cliche storyline, and the poor execution of its dialogue and cutscenes, with receiving a score of 55/100 on Metacritic[4], and 51.50% on GameRankings[5]. However, the game was nominated on Indie DB Indie of the Year 2014 Awards for category Adventure games[6].
Meanwhile for DreadOut 2, it receiving a "mixed" score on Steam[9], and having not enough score yet on Metacritic[10].
Online Presence
The game get much popularity on March, 3rd 2013 after YouTuber PewDiePie [7] uploaded video "DreadOut – Part 1 – Indonesian Horror Game". In the video, PewDiePie playing the demo version of the game. The video gained 11 million views in 7 years (shown below).
Film
On November, 30th 2018, the game got film adaptation with a same name after Indonesian production company GoodHouse.id[11] released an official trailer on their Instagram @dreadoutmovie[12] (shown below). The film itself was released on January, 3rd 2019.
Synopsis
The story of a group of high school students who explore an empty apartment for social media fame. One of the students accidentally opens a mysterious portal that awakens a supernatural being that later drags them to hell.
