About

Nvidia RTX 50 Series Graphics Cards, also known as Nvidia RTX 5000 Series GPUs, refers to the upcoming Nvidia RTX 50-series desktop graphics cards (or GPUs) announced by the company in early January 2025 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The product line had been highly speculated leading up to the reveal and leaked information was shared across Reddit and X / Twitter since December 2024. The new GPUs will notably feature the $1,999 RTX 5090, a $999 RTX 5080, a $749 RTX 5070 Ti and a $549 RTX 5070, which will be available on January 30th, 2025. Since their unveiling, the 50-series GPUs have received mixed reactions on social media, with many netizens complaining about the high prices and the amount of VRAM potentially being insufficient for modern games, especially when compared to Nvidia's older cards like the GTX 1060, a 6GB VRAM GPU released in July 2016.

History

Rumors about Nvidia's RTX 50-series started to appear online in September 2024, as X[1] user @Pirat_Nation posted one of the earliest information about the upcoming product, writing "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Blackwell rumors hint at higher power consumption." The tweet (seen below) received more than 45,000 views and 370 likes in four months.

Reveal

On January 6th, 2025, the Nvidia RTX 50 Series Graphics Cards were officially announced by CEO Jensen Huang during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), revealing a $1,999 RTX 5090, a $999 RTX 5080, a $749 RTX 5070 Ti and a $549 RTX 5070.

A trailer was also posted on Nvidia's official YouTube[2] channel that day describing how the GPUs are "equipped with a massive level of AI horsepower, the RTX 50 Series enables new experiences and next-level graphics fidelity." The video (seen below) received over 154,000 views and 4,300 likes in 17 hours.

Online Presence

Nvidia's RTX 50-series announcement spawned an array of divisive content on the internet, as some fans shared their excitement for the upgraded GPUs and others complained about the underwhelming improvements, among other issues.

For example, on January 7th, 2025, Redditor[3] u/J05A3 posted a Squidward's Lounge Chair meme as a reaction to Nvidia revealing the use of AI-generated performance in the upcoming GPUs. The post (seen below) received roughly 1,500 upvotes and 200 comments in a few hours.

Numerous tech-oriented YouTubers also discussed the 5000 series GPUs from Nvidia following their reveal at CES 2025. On January 7th, the Gamers Nexus YouTube channel uploaded a video covering the details of the new graphics cards, receiving over 929,000 views, 41,000 likes and 6,800 comments in 15 hours (shown below).

RTX 50 Series VRAM Debate

Discussions around the RTX 50 Series have also highlighted a significant controversy regarding the VRAM capacities of the new graphics cards, with many arguing they may be insufficient for modern games, which will feature "ninth-generation NVIDIA encoders for advanced video editing and livestreaming, and come with NVIDIA DLSS 4 and up to 32GB of VRAM," as Nvidia's[4] blog details.

For instance, on January 7th, 2025, Redditor[5] u/Opposite_Show_9881 posted a full review of the RTX 50 series to the /r/radeon subreddit, writing, "When you consider that the 4070 Super exists for $600 and is 90% of a 4070 Ti, this is basically at best an overclocked 4070 super with a $50 discount with the same 12 GB VRAM that caused everyone to give it a bad review. Is this what you were waiting for?" The post amassed roughly 235 upvotes and 300 comments in a few hours.

On the same day, Redditor[6] u/Interesting-Big1980 posted a Steven Crowder's "Change My Mind" Campus Sign meme to the /r/pcmasterrace subreddit, writing, "With how graphics progress 8 GB of VRAM should be sufficient for any game. Nvidia still are greedy fucks." The post (seen below) gained more than 830 upvotes and 300 comments in a few hours.

It's not about Nvidia being greedy for VRAM, it's developers not giving a f--- about optimization anymore CHANGE MY MIND

5090 $1,999 Price Backlash

The pricing of the flagship RTX 5090 model at $1,999 also drew negative comments on the internet as numerous users reacted to the GPU retailing for nearly $2,000 and complained about the price tag.

For example, on January 7th, 2025, YouTuber[7] Daniel Owen posted a video about Nvidia's GPU prices (seen below), which garnered over 196,000 views and 7,300 likes in a few hours.

On the same day, Redditor[8] u/universal_megaking posted a greentext meme about the RTX 50 Series prices to the subreddit /r/greentext, which received roughly 1,100 upvotes and 60 comments in a few hours.
