Gran Hermano Argentina is the Argentinian version of the Big Brother reality franchise. The TV show has been running since 2001 and is based on a group of strangers living together in the Big Brother house, isolated from the outside world, while having all their steps followed by cameras around-the-clock, implying they have no privacy for three months. The show has been a popular trending topic on social media with new memes being generated about each new season over the years.

History

The Gran Hermano Argentina show is based on the original Dutch television series Big Brother^[1] of the same name, created by John de Mol Jr^[2] and broadcast in the Netherlands in 1999. A clip of the show, reuploaded by The TeeVee Channel on YouTube,^[9] can be seen below.

According to Wikipedia,^[3] as of August 2021, "there have been 504 seasons of Big Brother in over 62 franchise countries and regions." The Argentinian version of the show started on March 10th, 2001, broadcasted by Telefe,^[4] and is currently airing its tenth season, which began on October 17th, 2022.

Reception

Two decades after the first broadcast of the reality show, many controversies have broken out in the media.^[5] Season 10 came to revive the rating of the show that has seen its audience migrate to other platforms over the course of several years. Season 10 of Gran Hermano Argentina is the latest installment of the reality show as of January 2023, which is receiving more engagement on social media than previous seasons. This is thanks to new rules, controversies and participant interactions, which led fans to share clips of the show and create new memes about it

Online Presence

Online, the show has established a passionate following that comments on the participants' daily activities on social media, especially Twitter. One post (seen below) uploaded by Twitter^[7] user @indirectsluismi on October 19th, 2022 uses a meme from The Office memes to express how he would react to everything if he was on the show.

Expulsion of Juliana DÍaz

On October 26th, 2022, the show appeared as one of the trending topics on Twitter Argentina after the participant Juliana DÍaz was expelled for "gossiping" too much.^[6] The post about her expulsion, uploaded to Instagram^[8] by @granhermanoar, reached 107,782 likes and 5,200 comments in six days (seen below).

Twitter^[10] user @lucio_llano described the expelled participant's reaction when she heard the news. The tweet, uploaded on October 27th, 2022, has garnered 29,400 likes and 1,400 retweets in five days.

Alfa's Elimination

On February 12th, 2023, participant Alfa was eliminated from the reality tv show with 52.83% of the votes. He was considered one of the strongest players in the game of the 2023 edition of Gran Hermano, which led to numerous memes and reactions on social media. Twitter user @Ramardoh1 shared a clip of Alfa's saying that it was time to say goodbye to the man that "made us laugh and kept the entertainment going" for the viewers. His tweet received 478,000 plays and 13,600 likes in two days.

The TikTok account of the reality show shared a clip of the remaining participant's thoughts after Alfa's elimination. The post (below, left), from February 14th, 2023, garnered 55,3k plays and 6,600 likes in a day. @germancitoog shared a behind the scene of the moment the presenter announced Alfa's elimination. The video (below, right) received 675,600 plays and 68,500 likes in a day.
