About
Lucifer is a police-procedural drama developed by Tom Kapinos originally for Fox. The show, centering on the Devil, Lucifer Morningstar, as he investigates homicide cases, aired on the channel for 3 seasons before cancellation and subsequent revival on Netflix after a large fan-led campaign to bring the show back on air.
Premise
The show centers around Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil, who after being cast out of Heaven to rule Hell, resigns from his role in defiance of God. Taking a so-called vacation to Los Angeles, he runs the nightclub Lux, before becoming involved in a murder case investigation with LAPD detective Chloe Decker. As the series progresses, Lucifer ends up as a civilian consultant for the LAPD, investigating homicides with Chloe using his own persuasive abilities, while supernatural forces attempt to have him return to rule over Hell.
History
The show was developed by Tom Kapinos and was based upon the DC Comics character of the same name created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg for the comic book series The Sandman, which originally ran from 1989 to 1996, alongside its spin-off comic book series by Mike Carey, both of which were published under DC Comics' Vertigo label.
The show premiered on Fox on January 10th, 2016, with Tom Ellis starring as Lucifer Morningstar and Lauren German as Chloe Decker. The show was eventually picked up two more seasons by Fox that aired from September 2016 until May 2017, and October 2017 to May 2018. On May 11th, 2018, the show was cancelled due to low ratings, leading to hashtag campaigns on Twitter for a network to pick up the show again. On June 8th, it was reported that Netflix had picked up the show, and would produce and air a fourth season on its streaming service as a Netflix Original Series.
On June 6th, 2019, it was announced that the show would be renewed for a fifth and final season.
Reception
The first season of the show was met with a generally mixed reception, though with later seasons, the show was received considerably more positively. On IMDb, the show currently maintains a user rating of 8.2/10 from over 150,000 users. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an average rating of 87% from critics and an average user score of 85%. Brian Moylan writing for The Guardian, spoke of the first episode of the series as "enjoyable but sticks to a path more well-trodden than the road to hell."
