A niche meme known as "Chopped Chin" is going viral on Instagram Reels and many are calling it the "first meme of 2025."
While the meme began in December 2024, it's been blowing up over the past few days as it continues to pop up on Instagram users' Reels feeds, inspiring a lot of mixed opinions on whether or not the meme should be left in 2024.
So what is the Chopped Chin meme, where does the video come from, what song does it use and what does "chopped chin" even mean? Here's what you need to know.
What Is The 'Chopped Chin' Meme?
Back in August 2023, the official Instagram page for the Atlanta Dream, a WNBA team, posted a video of former WNBA player Renee Montgomery dancing courtside with her cousin.
The video went viral, but didn't become the subject of memes until over a year later. Then, in early December, Instagram user halal_man_2 decided to use it for big views.
That month, the user began consistently posting the video with a new on-screen caption every time, always set to the song "Bring Me Back (Enox Mantano Remix)" by Miles Away. The captions are mostly motivational, inspirational and emotional and remind many of the type of captions you might see on Facebook or Tumblr in 2015.
These videos started popping up on Instagram Reels feeds everywhere, and now, users are taking notice.
How Is 'Chopped Chin' Used In Memes?
As the videos by halal_man_2 continued to go viral on IG Reels, people started referring to both the account itself and the man seen in the video as "Chopped Chin."
This is presumably, based on comments left on the videos, due to the appearance of the man in the video's chin, with "chopped" being a slang term essentially meaning "ugly."
The videos' success have inspired halal_man_2 to keep making videos, but have also inspired ironic memes about Chopped Chin.
Many of these are posted by the dedicated gimmick account choppedchinfan, who has been using the same tactic of repeatedly posting the video with humorous captions. There have also been efforts to make the meme go viral on TikTok.
