And the meme of December 2024 goes to …

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting. From conspiracy theories casting doubt on Mangione's involvement in the shooting and people coming up with funny alibies for him to myriad passionate posts of support for the suspected shooter, it has been quite evident how exactly people on social media felt about the act. As the story of the shooting was spinning out to become one of the biggest and most heated topics of the year, there had been plenty of memes, too, ranging from fancams to edits of Mangione's perp walk photographs. Almost 25 percent of you voted for Luigi's Mansion Luigi Mangione, which puts him firmly at the very top of our ranking.

Cursed Plankton

Do you know how in SpongeBob SquarePants episodes there's always that one frame that is creepily realistic for no reason? While the Cursed Plankton meme that we have in second place with 16 percent of votes is actually not one of these, it could easily pass as one. Posted on DeviantArt in 2010, the photoshop recently strung some special chord with users on TikTok who have been memeing Plankton's dehydrated, suffering and disgusted face for the entire month.

Locked In Alien

In third place with 14 percent of total votes we have Locked In Alien, the ultimate life form in the ultimate state of concentration. The animation of a tall grey alien spitting some facts while "Scissorhands" by Trekkrrholymountain plays in the background quickly became popularized with the TikTok crowd, who posted video captions, edits and other memes based on it. You win the lock-off this time, extraterrestrials.

Pepe the King Prawn

Missing the podium by just the tiniest bit, in fourth place we find Pepe the King Prawn displaying cortisol levels previously thought impossible to achieve. Simple to relate to, Pepe with his disheveled hair and stressed-out face has been plaguing everyone's timelines for the best part of December as users posted TFW memes based on the image on TikTok and other platforms. A respectable 13.5 percent of votes go to this burnt-out Muppet.

Find Luigi Game

No doubt owing some of its success to the number one meme on our list, the Find Luigi game (officially known as Wanted!) wraps up our top five for December 2024. The two-decade-old minigame for the Nintendo DS saw some use in memes in previous years but went viral this month thanks to the @FindLuigi gimmick account posting increasingly difficult "find Luigi" challenges. As Luigi Mangione was named as the prime suspect in the UHC CEO shooting, users collectively agreed that more than just one post about the minigame was blessed by Apollo's gift of prophecy.

Now for the memes that didn't have the fuel to finish in the top five this month. In places six and onwards, we have Hawk Tuah GIrl's meme coin getting rug pulled (4.5%), the fantastic adventures of everyone's favorite childhood hero (3.5%), the many memes and great expectations of Marvel Rivals (3%), the majestic voice and lyrics of Dave Blunts (2.5%), TikToker Kya and her delicious cooking (2.5%), the much appreciated rise of the Squirrel Girl fandom (2.5%), some people thinking that everything in the sky must a drone (1.5%), that one friend who is too everything (1%), that one PhD study about the politics of smell (1%) and last but not least, the King Von Stare that we forgot to include on the poll.
