The Meg is a movie franchise about a 75-foot-long (23 m) megalodon shark. The first film premiered on August 2018 and the sequel Meg 2: The Trench is expected to premiere on August 4th, 2023, in the United States. Online, the movie is the subject of mockery, parody videos, ironic memes and photoshopped posters similar to the Jaws Poster Parodies.
History
On August 10th, 2018, The Meg[1] premiered in U.S. theaters. The science and fiction film was directed by Jon Turteltaub and It is based on the 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror[2] by Steve Alten. The movie's plot focuses on a prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon that attacks a deep-sea submersible, leaving it disabled and trapping the crew at the bottom of the Pacific. A team of sea specialists is formed to rescue the staff trapped under the ocean. On April 9th, 2018, Warner Bros. Pictures' YouTube[3] channel uploaded the first trailer of the film (shown below), which garnered over 27 million views and 76,000 likes in five years.
Meg 2: The Trench
On May 8th, 2023 the first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench was posted on Warner Bros. Pictures' YouTube[4] channel. The video (shown below) amassed over 36 million views and 278,000 likes in four months.
Meg 2 Reviews
Upon the debut of Meg 2: The Trench on the review website Rotten Tomatoes, on August 3rd, 2023, the film received a 0% score, garnering all negative reviews[5]. The bad score became the subject of online mockery on social media. For example, Twitter[6] user @ZoeRoseBryant posted the Rotten Tomatoes score paired with the caption "The movies are back." The post (shown below) garnered roughly 6,400 likes and 509 retweets in two hours.
Online Presence
The premise of the movie became the subject of mockery and parody memes on social media. The most prominent meme were photoshopped images of the Family Guy character "Meg" as the megalodon shark [The Meg] in movie posters. For instance, Memedroid[7] user @DeadZone666 added Family Guy's Meg face in a movie poster from The Meg film (shown below, left), which garnered over 780 reactions since it was uploaded on July 1st, 2019. Twitter[8] user @MrGarrisonFjord posted on May 11th, 2018, a different movie poster featuring the cartoon character replacing the shark (shown below, right). The post received 1 like in five years.
