About
Super Mario 3D All Stars was a game released on September 18 for the Nintendo Switch in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. It is a collection of the three most classic and important Mario games in 3D: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. The game received a lot of criticism for various reasons, including the price, the lack of improvement, among others.
Origin
On September 3, 2020, Nintendo released a video commemorating the 35th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros for NES with various Mario games that would arrive between the last third of 2020 and the first third of 2021.
In the video, more specifically from minute 8:55 and being the last advertisement of the video, Nintendo showed a trailer for what would be Super Mario 3D All Stars. The video itself gained more than 11 million views.
Later, on September 14, Nintendo released the game's trailer separately, thus gaining more than 1.5 million views.
Super Mario 35th Anniversary
Four days after the trailer was released, the game was released.
Controversies
When the game came out, many people criticized it for various reasons, which are explained here:
Little graphical improvement in Super Mario 64
Although all three games generally received graphical improvements, such as being in HD and having texture rescaling, Super Mario 64 looked quite similar to its Nintendo 64 version, without adapting the graphics and taking advantage of the power of the Nintendo Switch. Also, Super Mario 64 is the only game in the trilogy that isn't in widescreen, which the others are (Super Mario Sunshine originally didn't have it either, but in Super Mario 3D All Stars they added it)
No BLJ
Because they used the Shindo Pack Taio version of Super Mario 64 (second Japanese version of the game), this version did not have the famous Backwards Long Jump, so the 0, 1, 16, 30 and 50 star Speedrun categories could not be performed.
Lack of languages
This is a problem that only Super Mario 64 would have. Many people, generally Spanish and Italian, felt that there was a lack of an option to change the languages to Spanish and Italian, apart from English, German and French, as they already were. This is strange, knowing that in 2004 its remake Super Mario 64 DS was released, which did have translations into these two languages.
Little content
The game only includes the three titles plus their soundtracks, which for some users was not enough.
Price
Similar to most ports, Super Mario 3D All Stars received criticism for its price, costing $60. Several people said they wouldn't pay $60 for three games from 1996, 2002, and 2007 respectively with only one graphical upgrade.
Absence of Super Mario Galaxy 2
Many people made memes about it because neither Super Mario Galaxy 2 nor Super Mario 3D Land were included (Super Mario 3D World would be understandable since they released a port to Switch in 2021 and Super Mario Odyssey is already native to Nintendo Switch)
Limited date
The biggest controversy surrounding the trilogy was its limited release date, as it would only be available digitally until March 31, 2021, in addition to stopping the creation of physical copies, so now, to get a copy of the game, you would have to look in retail stores to see if there were any second-hand ones.
Trilogy memes
Due to its controversy, Super Mario 3D All Stars won many memes, like these:
