On April 24th, 2014, Redditor HighFromCost submitted the video to the /r/youtubehaiku[6] subreddit. On May 12th, YouTuber ZippAgain uploaded an edited version of the clip in which a Godzilla roar sound effect is played while a blue laser beam shoots out from the elephant shrew's mouth (shown below, left). On December 17th, YouTuber TheRider uploaded a variation in which the narrator says ''Take a closer look at that meme'' with a loud yell edited over the elephant shrew (shown below, right).

On December 31st, Tumblr[5] user Trained-Chimpanzee posted an edited version of the clip with the song "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Neon Genesis Evangelion, garnering upwards of 145,000 notes in the next two weeks (shown below).
