That Thing's Green refers to a line that was said by character Harold from SpongeBob SquarePants after he saw SpongeBob's green "pretty patty." In 2022, the scene gained attention in Indonesia under the Indonesian version of the line "Benda Itu Hijau", which was used to mock green-colored things.

Origin

On February 24th, 2001, season two episode 25b of SpongeBob SquarePants etitled "Patty Hype" premiered in the US[1]. In the episode, the character Harold asks SpongeBob if he sells some food, and SpongBob shows him his green patty. Harold says "That thing's green" and laughs after seeing it. On May 7th, 2013, YouTube[2] user ImmaSpongeBob uploaded the scene. The video received more than 470,000 views in nine years (shown below).



Spread

Starting in the summer of 2022, the scene gained popularity among Indonesian speakers, who used it to make fun of any green-colored things. For example on June 24th, 2022, YouTube[3] user Fanzzz XD uploaded a compilation video of green colored things such as YouTube monetization logos, money and shirts. The video received more than 199,000 views in three months (shown below, left). On June 28th, 2022, YouTube[4] user Andre Sae uploaded a similar video. It received more than 284,000 views in three months (shown below, right).

On June 27th, 2022, YouTube[5] user Ryuko XZ uploaded video of a Fall Guys knock-off Stumble Guys meme using the scene to making fun of any green colored skins in the game. The video received more than 385,000 views in three months (shown below, left). On June 25th, 2022, YouTube[6] user ZEP 72 uploaded a similar video that received more than 1.1 million views in three months (shown below, right).
