"That's Just a Trashcan" refers to a humorous exchange between Wonder Woman 1984 characters Diana Prince and Steve Trevor in which Diana informs Steve that he mistook a street trash can for a piece of art. Following the release of the trailer for the movie, a multi-panel meme format based on the scene gained popularity online.

Origin

On December 8th, 2019, the first trailer for the 2020 film Wonder Woman 1984 was uploaded to YouTube.[1] In one scene of the trailer, characters Diana Prince (Wonder Woman, portrayed by Gal Gadot) and Steve Trevor (portrayed by Chris Pine) are shown walking around an outdoor art display. When Steve stops to admire a trashcan, Diana informs him of his mistake.



- It's all art. That… That's just a trashcan.
- It's just a trashcan! Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Following the release of the trailer, users on Twitter, Reddit and Facebook posted memes based on the scene, with multiple users creating versions of the format independently. The earliest known post suggesting the format was made by Twitter user @UberKryptonian at 16:27 EST, with the tweet receiving over 349 retweets and 1,300 likes (shown below, left).[2] At the same time, Facebook, user Henry Lund posted the first known meme based on the format in DC Marthaposting group (shown below, right).[3]

Within one hour following the initial posts, Twitter user @UberKryptonian posted two memes utilizing the format, gaining over 600 retweets and 1,800 likes and over 150 retweets and 660 likes, respectively (shown below, left and center).[4][5] On Reddit, user buhlmbo made the first known post based on the format at 16:34 EST (shown below, right).[6]
